‘A Minecraft Movie Squared’ Officially Revealed as Warner Bros. Expands Blockbuster Gaming Franchise

A Minecraft Movie Squared Officially Revealed

Warner Bros. and Legendary have officially revealed the title for the sequel to last year’s global gaming blockbuster A Minecraft Movie. The follow-up will be titled A Minecraft Movie Squared, continuing the studios’ push to expand Minecraft into a major theatrical franchise.

The announcement was made through a joint Instagram post shared by Warner Bros., Legendary, and Minecraft on Saturday. “Ready for another adventure? The world of #Minecraft is expanding once again with A Minecraft Movie Squared!” the post read in part, officially confirming the sequel’s branding after months of speculation surrounding the project.

The reveal arrives after the original Minecraft adaptation became one of the biggest commercial successes of 2025, grossing approximately $957.8 million worldwide and emerging as the second-highest-grossing movie of the year globally. The film’s massive performance firmly established Minecraft as one of Hollywood’s most valuable gaming properties and reinforced the growing dominance of video game adaptations at the worldwide box office.

Jared Hess, who directed the first film, is set to return for the sequel and is reportedly co-writing the screenplay alongside Chris Galletta, one of the original writers. The returning producing team includes Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Roy Lee, Eric McLeod, Kayleen Walters, Torfi Frans Ólafsson, and Jason Momoa, who also starred in the original movie.

The sequel will also bring back several cast members from the first film. Alongside Momoa, returning actors reportedly include Jack Black, Sebastian Hansen, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, and Jennifer Coolidge. Meanwhile, Kirsten Dunst has officially joined the franchise, marking one of the biggest additions to the sequel’s expanding ensemble.

Industry reports and fan speculation have also centered around the possibility of the sequel exploring deeper Minecraft mythology and internet lore. Rumors surrounding Matt Berry potentially playing Herobrine — the legendary fan-created Minecraft myth character — have circulated heavily online, though the casting detail has not been officially confirmed by the studio.

Production on A Minecraft Movie Squared is reportedly already underway in New Zealand, with Warner Bros. targeting a July 23, 2027 theatrical release date.

The sequel announcement further highlights how dramatically the video game adaptation landscape has changed in Hollywood over the last several years. Once considered risky theatrical investments, gaming properties have now become some of the industry’s most commercially reliable franchises following the success of films like The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Five Nights at Freddy’s, and the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise.

Despite its enormous commercial success, the first Minecraft movie received mixed reviews from critics. While some reviewers praised the film’s visual imagination, playful world-building, and emphasis on childlike wonder, others criticized the movie for leaning too heavily on existing IP without fully capturing the limitless creativity associated with the original game.

Still, audience reception proved significantly stronger than critical response, particularly among younger viewers and gaming fandoms who embraced the movie’s energetic tone and faithful references to Minecraft culture. The film’s performance ultimately demonstrated the massive mainstream reach of the Minecraft brand, which remains one of the best-selling and most recognizable video games in history.

The title Squared itself appears designed to lean directly into the franchise’s identity. Beyond functioning as a playful sequel label, the name references Minecraft’s iconic block-shaped visual aesthetic while also embracing the internet-driven humor and gaming culture surrounding the property.

Jared Hess has previously described the Minecraft universe as creatively limitless because of its expansive biomes, creatures, mods, and player-generated storytelling possibilities. That flexibility gives the sequel room to expand far beyond the scope of the original film while continuing to tap into the game’s enormous global fanbase.

With the first movie transforming into one of Hollywood’s biggest gaming adaptations and the sequel already carrying major franchise expectations, A Minecraft Movie Squared is now positioned as one of Warner Bros.’ most important tentpole releases heading into 2027.
