Amazon MGM Studios is developing Vineyard Haven, a romantic drama about two people who reconnect nearly a decade after sharing a memorable summer on Martha’s Vineyard. Nkechi Okoro Carroll, the showrunner of All American, is writing the screenplay and will serve as an executive producer. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Michael McGrath will produce the film through Berlanti Schechter Films.
Set on Martha’s Vineyard, an island off the coast of Massachusetts, the film follows a sidelined NBA star who returns to the island while dealing with an injury and a woman who comes home to recover from a difficult marriage. Their reunion gives them an opportunity to revisit a connection formed during their teenage years and consider what it might mean for their lives nearly ten years later.
The story begins with the two characters meeting as teenagers during a summer on Martha’s Vineyard. They hope to see each other again during the summers that follow, but their plans never work out. As the years pass, the possibility of reconnecting remains unrealised until they eventually return to the island as adults.
By then, both have undergone significant changes. The man has become an NBA star, but an injury has sidelined him. The woman, meanwhile, is trying to move forward after a difficult marriage. Their circumstances give the romance a more mature starting point than the teenage connection that first brought them together.
Rather than simply resuming their earlier relationship, the characters must navigate the lives they have built and the experiences that have shaped them. Their reunion creates an opportunity to discover whether their connection has endured the years apart and whether they can find a new direction together.
Carroll’s involvement brings experience in character-driven television drama to the project. She is best known for her work on All American, the sports drama that concluded its eight-season run in October 2026. She also created and ran its spinoff, All American: Homecoming, and served as showrunner of NBC’s Found.
Her work on All American connects her to a series centred on sport and the personal lives of its characters. In Vineyard Haven, the lead character’s career as a professional basketball player forms part of a broader story about relationships and personal challenges. His injury provides an important element of the premise, while the woman’s return after a difficult marriage introduces a separate set of circumstances into their reunion.
Berlanti, meanwhile, has extensive experience developing television dramas, including The Flash and several series within the Arrowverse. His producing partnership with Schechter has also been associated with projects across different genres. For Vineyard Haven, Berlanti and McGrath will join Schechter as producers, while Carroll will lead the screenplay and serve as an executive producer.
The project brings together a creative team whose careers have largely included television storytelling for a feature built around a central romantic relationship. The film’s premise allows the characters’ shared history and present circumstances to shape the story, with their return to Martha’s Vineyard providing the setting for their renewed connection.
The island is central to the film’s premise, serving as the place where the characters first met and where they eventually have another opportunity to reconnect. Its name also forms part of the title, Vineyard Haven, linking the setting directly to the story.
Their return to a place associated with their teenage years gives both characters a reason to confront their shared past. Their earlier plans to meet again never materialised, but their reunion creates a new opportunity to understand how their lives have changed and whether the feelings associated with that first summer still have a place in their present.
The contrast between the leads establishes the film’s central dynamic. The NBA star must contend with an injury at a point when his professional career has already reached a significant level, while the woman is attempting to rebuild her life after a difficult marriage. Neither returns to the island with everything settled, and their individual circumstances shape the possibility of a relationship.
At its core, Vineyard Haven is built around missed opportunities, the passage of time and the possibility of starting again. The characters’ teenage summer created a connection, but circumstances prevented them from meeting again as they had hoped. Nearly a decade later, their return to Martha’s Vineyard gives them another chance to discover what that connection means and whether it can develop into something different in adulthood.
