Attack of the Killer Tomatoes: Organic Intelligence, the fifth installment in the long-running cult franchise, is heading to VOD platforms on October 6. The release follows the film’s theatrical rollout, which began August 7 in select U.S. cities.
The digital release comes through a new strategic distribution partnership between Starboard Entertainment and Stonecutter Media, with additional titles from the collaboration expected to be announced in the coming months.
Speaking about the partnership, Stonecutter Media owner and president Steven Karel explained why the film fits the company’s distribution strategy.
“Stonecutter Media is in the business of distributing and promoting edgy, over-the-top films, and Attack of the Killer Tomatoes: Organic Intelligence fits right in our wheelhouse,” he said. “These types of films have proven time and time again to have a sales edge that you don’t get with softer movies.”
Starboard founder Thomas Zambeck echoed that sentiment, saying the project represented the right opportunity for the two companies to work together.
“Steve and I have known each other for years, and we always believed we would eventually find the right project to work on together. Attack of the Killer Tomatoes: Organic Intelligence is exactly that project. It has a worldwide fan base, an unmistakable identity and the kind of bold creative vision that cuts through a crowded market.”
The film follows a young biotech prodigy who develops a revolutionary genetically engineered super-vegetable intended to solve some of humanity’s biggest problems. When the experiment inevitably spirals out of control, it unleashes a new generation of mutant killer tomatoes, kicking off another chaotic chapter in the franchise’s decades-long legacy.
The story has been pitched as blending the tone of Jurassic Park with the satirical edge of Dr. Strangelove, while layering commentary on tech-industry hubris over the series’ trademark campy horror-comedy style.
The ensemble cast is led by John Astin, reprising his role as the unhinged Professor Mortimer Gangreen. He is joined by comedy veteran David Koechner as the U.S. president’s press secretary, Academy Award nominee Eric Roberts, horror actor Catherine Corcoran, Dan Bakkedahl, Daniel Roebuck, Myrna Velasco, Vernée Watson and Paul Bates.
David Ferino directs the film from a screenplay by original franchise co-creators Costa Dillon and J. Stephen Peace, who also serve as executive producers and continue their creative involvement with the series they launched decades ago.
Ferino previously directed the horror film The 100 Candles Game: The Last Possession and formerly served as head of video production at Deadline Hollywood. The film is produced by Roger M. Mayer and Michael Polis in association with Atomic Toybox Entertainment.
Attack of the Killer Tomatoes: Organic Intelligence marks the franchise’s first new feature film entry since the 1990s. The series began with the original 1978 cult classic Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, followed by Return of the Killer Tomatoes in 1988, Killer Tomatoes Strike Back in 1991 and Killer Tomatoes Eat France in 1992.
The franchise also spawned an animated children’s television series, helping introduce the property to a new generation of fans during its television run.
The new film is rated PG-13 for language, some violent content and suggestive material, with a runtime of 1 hour and 36 minutes.
Its theatrical rollout began in major markets including Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and San Diego before expanding to additional cities throughout August.
With its theatrical run followed by a VOD release on October 6, Attack of the Killer Tomatoes: Organic Intelligence is now set to bring the decades-old cult franchise to audiences at home, continuing a legacy that began with the original film’s midnight-movie roots.
