India Box Office: Awarapan 2 Wins Independence Day Clash as Vishwanath and Sons Crosses ₹110 Cr Worldwide

The Independence Day weekend turned into a major box office battle, with two big Hindi releases going head-to-head while a Tamil-Telugu crossover also delivered one of the stronger openings of the year. Emraan Hashmi’s Awarapan 2 emerged as the clear winner over Sunny Deol’s Batwara 1947, while Suriya’s Vishwanath and Sons continued its strong run to cross ₹110 crore worldwide. Meanwhile, Spider-Man: Brand New Day held on in its second weekend despite facing competition from several new releases.
Awarapan 2 delivered the standout performance of the weekend, giving Emraan Hashmi the biggest opening weekend of his solo career. The film opened to ₹21.89 crore net on Friday before jumping sharply to ₹33.77 crore on Saturday. That marked the highest single-day collection of Hashmi’s career and a 116% increase over his previous personal best, set by Baadshaho. Sunday added another ₹26.25 crore, taking the film’s three-day India net total to ₹81.75 crore. With ₹12 crore from overseas markets, the film’s worldwide gross has reached ₹110.10 crore.
Vishwanath and Sons, starring Suriya and Mamitha Baiju and directed by Venky Atluri, also had a strong opening weekend despite a decline on Sunday. After collecting ₹17 crore on Day 1 and ₹22.25 crore on Day 2, the film added ₹20.55 crore net in India on Day 3, a drop of around 7.6% from Saturday. Its three-day India net total stands at ₹58.15 crore, while the India gross is ₹67.22 crore. With another ₹43 crore from overseas markets, the film has crossed ₹110 crore worldwide in just three days, making it one of the stronger Tamil-Telugu openers of the year.
Batwara 1947, the Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta-led Partition drama directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, had a more uneven weekend. The film opened at ₹5.75 crore on Friday before rising to ₹13.50 crore on Saturday. It then fell nearly 46% on Sunday, collecting ₹7.25 crore. The three-day India net total stands at ₹26.50 crore, while its worldwide gross is around ₹37 crore.
Backed by Aamir Khan Productions on a reported budget of ₹120 crore, Batwara 1947 now faces an important Monday. Another sharp decline could make its theatrical run increasingly challenging.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which delivered the biggest Hollywood opening weekend in Indian box office history last week, added ₹22.8 crore in its second weekend. The film has continued to hold ground despite three major new releases entering the market simultaneously.
Hollywood mystery drama The End of Oak Street, starring Anne Hathaway, Ewan McGregor and Maisy Stella, opened to ₹3.85 crore net in India across its first three days. Telugu romantic drama Hushar Pittalu, directed by Bikshu Koyagura, collected ₹1.60 crore, while Tamil release Magudam earned ₹1.84 crore.
Further down the chart, Agadha collected ₹0.87 crore, while Bengali release Keu Bole Biplobi Keu Bole Dakat brought in ₹0.86 crore. Sammarth and Pallaburusu opened with ₹0.45 crore and ₹0.10 crore, respectively.
The Independence Day weekend ultimately produced a clear winner in Awarapan 2, which comfortably outperformed Batwara 1947. At the same time, Vishwanath and Sons delivered a strong South Indian opening and crossed the ₹110 crore worldwide mark in three days, while Spider-Man: Brand New Day continued to demonstrate strong holdover business in its second weekend.
