Cocktail 2 has recorded a softer-than-expected start at the Indian box office despite arriving with a major star cast, franchise recognition, and strong pre-release buzz. According to industry tracker estimates, the romantic drama registered around 15% occupancy till its evening shows and had collected approximately ₹5 crore net by 5 PM on its opening day.
The film was released across roughly 7,000 shows nationwide, giving it a substantial theatrical footprint. While occupancy is expected to improve during the night shows, the initial trends have fallen short of expectations for a film carrying the scale and commercial ambitions of Cocktail 2.
The muted opening is particularly noteworthy because the film had shown encouraging signs in advance bookings. According to trade estimates, Cocktail 2 sold tickets worth approximately ₹8.8 crore before release, including block bookings. Those numbers had suggested a stronger opening day performance, especially considering the popularity of its lead actors and the recall value associated with the Cocktail brand. However, advance sales alone do not guarantee a strong opening, and the film appears to have struggled in converting that momentum into substantial walk-in business during its daytime and evening shows.
Directed by Homi Adajania, Cocktail 2 stars Shahid Kapoor, Kriti Sanon, and Rashmika Mandanna in the lead roles. The film is backed by Maddock Films and Luv Films and serves as a spiritual successor to Adajania’s 2012 romantic drama Cocktail, which starred Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone, and Diana Penty.
The original film emerged as one of the most popular urban relationship dramas of its era and remains widely remembered for its music, performances, and portrayal of modern relationships. That legacy, combined with the presence of three bankable stars, had led many trade observers to expect a stronger opening for the sequel. Adding to the film’s commercial appeal is music by Pritam, whose soundtrack had generated significant interest ahead of release. Promotional campaigns featuring the lead trio also helped maintain visibility in the weeks leading up to opening day.
Early audience reactions, however, appear mixed. While several viewers have praised the chemistry between the lead actors, the film’s music, and its glossy presentation, others have expressed reservations about the screenplay and the handling of its central love-triangle narrative. As a result, word of mouth could become the deciding factor in determining the film’s box office trajectory over the coming days.
The box office math surrounding Cocktail 2 is also likely to attract attention in trade circles. While the makers have not officially disclosed the film’s budget, industry estimates place its production and marketing cost at around ₹150 crore. Trade reports further suggest that the producers may have already recovered approximately ₹75 crore through pre-sale deals, including OTT, satellite, music, and ancillary rights. If those reports are accurate, the film’s theatrical recovery target would be around 170 cr. However, if the film is largely dependent on box office revenues, it could require well over ₹300 crore in India net collections to fully recover its reported cost through theatrical business alone.
At the moment, reaching those numbers appears challenging based on opening-day trends alone. However, Friday numbers rarely tell the entire story, particularly for mainstream Hindi films targeting multiplex audiences. Strong growth on Saturday and Sunday can significantly alter the narrative and help compensate for a softer opening day.
With the night shows still to come and the crucial Saturday-Sunday period ahead, the weekend box office numbers will ultimately determine whether Cocktail 2 can find momentum or face an uphill battle in the weeks ahead.
