Daisy Ridley, Sosie Bacon and Simon Rex are set to lead Get Rid of It, a horror feature that turns a cross-country road trip into a fight for survival. Ry Russo-Young will direct the film from a screenplay by Gemma Holdway, with production scheduled to begin in early 2027. The project is being introduced to buyers at the American Film Market (AFM), with Upgrade, CAA Media Finance and Range Select handling sales.
Ridley will play Harper, who discovers she is pregnant following a one-night stand with a mysterious drifter named Miller, portrayed by Rex. Bacon is set to play Harper’s sister, Jessie. The two women embark on a road trip across the country, but their journey takes a frightening turn when they realise that what is growing inside Harper may not be human. The premise places the film at the intersection of a road-trip thriller and horror, using an unexpected pregnancy to introduce a supernatural element into an otherwise familiar journey.
The central relationship in Get Rid of It revolves around Harper and Jessie, with the sisters forced to confront an increasingly dangerous situation while travelling together. Miller’s connection to Harper brings Rex into the story, although further details about his character and his role in the events that follow have not been disclosed. The filmmakers have also kept the precise nature of the pregnancy and the film’s wider plot under wraps. No additional cast members or production details have been announced.
Russo-Young described the project as “propulsive and playful”, adding that its strength lies in “its compelling point of view and heart beneath the horror.” Her comments suggest that the film is intended to balance its unsettling premise with an emotional core rather than rely solely on its genre elements. The director has also expressed excitement about bringing the story to the screen with the assembled cast and creative team.
Ridley is best known internationally for playing Rey in the most recent Star Wars trilogy. Her other film credits include Young Woman and the Sea, Zak Hilditch’s zombie thriller We Bury the Dead and Murder on the Orient Express. She is next expected to appear opposite Johnny Depp in Ti West’s upcoming film Ebenezer. Get Rid of It adds another genre project to her recent work, placing her at the centre of a survival story that moves from an unexpected personal development to an increasingly threatening situation.
Bacon brings previous horror experience through Parker Finn’s Smile, in which she starred before continuing to move between film and television projects. She recently appeared in the SXSW title Family Movie alongside her father Kevin Bacon, mother Kyra Sedgwick and brother Travis Bacon. She is also part of the cast of Scarpetta, the series led by Nicole Kidman and Jamie Lee Curtis, and previously appeared in the crime drama Mare of Easttown. Her casting as Jessie gives the film a central sister relationship through which much of its story is expected to unfold.
Rex, meanwhile, is known for his performance as Mikey in Sean Baker’s Red Rocket. His more recent screen credits include Zoë Kravitz’s Blink Twice and Nic Pizzolatto’s Easy’s Waltz. His casting as Miller brings him into a story that begins with a chance encounter but develops into something far more threatening. While the filmmakers have not revealed how extensively his character features in the narrative, his connection to Harper provides the starting point for the film’s central premise.
Russo-Young’s previous feature directing credits include Before I Fall, the science-fiction teen thriller starring Zoey Deutch, and The Sun Is Also a Star, adapted from Nicola Yoon’s novel and led by Yara Shahidi and Charles Melton. She has also directed episodes of television series including Shrinking. With Get Rid of It, she returns to feature filmmaking with a horror story built around family, uncertainty and survival. The project also brings her together with screenwriter Gemma Holdway, whose script provides the foundation for the film’s combination of road-trip storytelling and horror.
The film is being produced by David Lancaster, whose credits include Whiplash, Nightcrawler and Drive. Whiplash received an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture, while Nightcrawler and Drive are among Lancaster’s other notable productions. His involvement adds an experienced producer to the creative team as the project moves towards production and begins its sales process at AFM.
With its three leads attached and international sales underway, Get Rid of It is moving towards its planned production start. Filming is expected to begin in early 2027, although a theatrical release date, additional casting and further story details have yet to be announced. The combination of a cross-country journey, a family relationship at its centre and an increasingly unsettling pregnancy gives the film its distinctive starting point. Further announcements are expected to clarify how the filmmakers develop this premise into a feature-length horror story.
