Daniel MacPherson joins Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Russell Crowe in Bluefly

Australian actor Daniel MacPherson has joined the cast of Bluefly, the upcoming action thriller starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Russell Crowe. MacPherson will play Dugan, a battle-hardened soldier who is part of the Special Operations team at the centre of the film’s story. Directed by Nimród Antal, the project brings MacPherson back together with Crowe and screenwriter David Frigerio following their collaboration on Beast.

MacPherson is known for his work in projects such as Foundation, Land of Bad, The Osiris Child and Infini. His experience across action and science-fiction productions makes him a fitting addition to a film that combines a covert military operation with elements of mystery and the unexplained. In Bluefly, his character Dugan is among the soldiers deployed on a mission into the Congo, where an operation to recover a classified military aircraft takes an unexpected turn.

The casting also reunites MacPherson with Crowe and Frigerio, both of whom worked with him on Beast, the mixed martial arts action film starring Crowe and MacPherson. Frigerio wrote the screenplay for that film, and the three collaborators are now coming together for a project that moves away from the fighting arena and into a world of military operations, science-fiction mystery and an unexplained threat. Their previous association adds another connection to the ensemble, with MacPherson joining Crowe in a story that places an elite military unit in an increasingly dangerous situation.

At the centre of Bluefly is Myla Reese, played by Priyanka Chopra. A grieving United Nations interpreter, Myla becomes involved in a secret black-ops mission after a high-tech military aircraft crashes deep inside the Congo. The aircraft is the subject of a highly unusual recovery operation because, officially, it does not exist. What begins as a covert mission to retrieve the aircraft soon develops into something far more dangerous.

The operation brings together an elite Special Operations team tasked with travelling upriver through territory controlled by mercenaries and armed militias. The hostile environment presents an immediate challenge, but the mission takes a more disturbing turn when the team encounters a mysterious force concealed within the jungle. As the soldiers move deeper into the territory, the nature of their assignment begins to change, pushing the operation beyond the boundaries of a conventional military recovery mission.

The threat also creates uncertainty within the team. As reality begins to fracture around them, the soldiers realise that recovering the aircraft could have consequences they had not anticipated. Myla gradually becomes suspicious that Benny, played by Crowe, knows more about the danger than he has disclosed. A former pilot with a troubled past, Benny appears to hold important information about the threat confronting the team. His connection to the mission and the mystery surrounding the aircraft are likely to be central to the unfolding story.

While Chopra Jonas leads the film as Myla Reese, Crowe’s Benny provides another key figure in the operation. MacPherson’s Dugan joins the Special Operations unit, strengthening the military team that must navigate the dangerous territory and confront the unexplained force. The combination of a covert mission, a missing aircraft that officially does not exist and a mysterious presence in the jungle gives the film a premise that extends beyond a straightforward military action thriller.

Antal directs Bluefly, bringing previous genre credits such as Predators and Retribution to the project. The screenplay is credited to David Frigerio, William Eubank and Carlyle Eubank. Their respective previous credits include Beast, Underwater and Muzzle. The writing team brings together experience across action, science fiction and thriller storytelling, genres that intersect in the film’s premise.

Production is scheduled to take place on Australia’s Gold Coast, with cameras expected to roll shortly. Although the story is set in the Congo, Australia will provide the filming locations for the jungle-set thriller. The production will therefore use the Gold Coast as the setting for a story that takes the characters into a remote and hostile environment, where the mission gradually becomes more complicated than the team initially expects.

For Chopra Jonas, Bluefly adds another major international feature to her film slate. Her pairing with Crowe brings together two recognisable performers, while MacPherson’s casting adds another experienced action actor to the ensemble. The reunion of MacPherson, Crowe and Frigerio also gives the film a creative connection to Beast, although the new project takes their collaboration into a very different setting and genre.

With its combination of a covert military operation, an aircraft that officially does not exist and an unexplained force hidden in the Congolese jungle, Bluefly brings together action and science-fiction mystery. MacPherson’s addition as Dugan strengthens the Special Operations team at the centre of the story, while the reunion with Crowe and Frigerio adds another dimension to the casting. As production prepares to begin on Australia’s Gold Coast, the central mystery remains what the team will discover when it reaches the crashed aircraft and why its existence has been kept secret.
