In a Violent Nature: Part 2, the sequel to Chris Nash’s 2024 slasher horror film, will arrive in theatres on February 12, 2027. The release date was announced by returning star Ry Barrett during Shudder’s panel at New York Comic Con on October 10. The sequel is coming from Independent Film Company and Shudder and will open over Valentine’s Day weekend.
The announcement follows the film’s world premiere at Fantastic Fest in September. The original In a Violent Nature premiered in the Midnight section of the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, drawing attention for its unusual approach to the slasher genre. Rather than following the usual group of potential victims, the film largely follows its masked killer, Johnny, as he moves through the wilderness.
Ry Barrett reprises his role as Johnny, the undead, firefighter-mask-wearing killer at the centre of the franchise. The sequel picks up where the first film ends, following Johnny as his violent rampage leads him to an Ottawa summer camp.
The story centres on a young outcast camper who is forced to spend the night with his counsellor sister and her friends during their annual end-of-season party. Their gathering brings Johnny into contact with a new group of potential victims, setting up another night of violence.
The film will continue the original’s distinctive approach to the slasher genre, which places audiences close to Johnny’s movements rather than following the story primarily through the eyes of those being hunted. The sequel is also expected to expand the character’s backstory and explore more of the world surrounding him.
The filmmakers have indicated that the new instalment will push the franchise’s practical effects and violent set pieces further. The original became known for its graphic kills and extended sequences following Johnny through forests and isolated locations. The sequel moves the action towards a summer camp setting, bringing familiar slasher elements into the franchise’s more unusual storytelling style.
Chris Nash returns to the franchise as co-director and screenwriter, joined behind the camera by Nate Wilson. Nash directed and wrote the original film, establishing its slow-paced, killer-centred approach to horror. Wilson’s involvement marks a new directing partnership for the sequel while Nash continues to guide the story.
Peter Kuplowsky, Shannon Hanmer and Nash serve as producers. Independent Film Company and Shudder are backing the sequel, continuing their involvement with the franchise.
The return of the creative team is central to the film’s continuation of the original’s approach. Rather than simply repeating a conventional slasher formula, In a Violent Nature: Part 2 aims to build on Johnny’s character and the world around him while retaining the perspective that distinguished the first film.
The February 12, 2027 release places In a Violent Nature: Part 2 in theatres during Valentine’s Day weekend. The film is also scheduled to open on the same date as Greta Gerwig’s Narnia, setting up a contrast between the horror sequel and the fantasy film.
With its world premiere already completed at Fantastic Fest, the sequel is now moving towards its theatrical release. Its summer camp setting, returning lead actor and continuation of Johnny’s story give the film a clear connection to the original, while the expanded backstory and new victims provide room to develop the franchise further.
In a Violent Nature: Part 2 opens exclusively in theatres on February 12, 2027.
