The India box office saw a mixed weekend from August 21 to 23, with several regional releases putting up strong numbers alongside established Hollywood titles. Irumudi emerged as the clear winner of the weekend, collecting ₹50.50 crore, while Awarapan 2 and Bethlehem Kudumba Unit followed with ₹22.75 crore and ₹20.85 crore, respectively. Meanwhile, Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Insidious: Out of the Further continued to attract audiences, although both remained well behind the weekend’s top performers.
Irumudi delivered the strongest performance of the weekend by a considerable margin, bringing in ₹50.50 crore in India. The film’s lead over the rest of the chart makes it the standout title of the weekend, with its collection more than double that of the second-placed Awarapan 2. The strong result also highlights the continued strength of regional cinema in the Indian theatrical market.
In second place, Awarapan 2 collected ₹22.75 crore during the weekend. The Emraan Hashmi-led sequel is continuing its theatrical run after a strong opening phase and remains one of the major Hindi performers in the current market. The film had already emerged as the winner of the Independence Day clash in its opening weekend, when it collected ₹81.75 crore in India, comfortably ahead of Batwara 1947.
Bethlehem Kudumba Unit also had a strong weekend, taking ₹20.85 crore in India. The Malayalam release, starring Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju and directed by Girish AD, opened in theatres on August 21 and received a strong start. The film had already collected ₹4.70 crore on its opening day, while reports also indicated strong early worldwide momentum.
Hollywood releases occupied the next two positions. Spider-Man: Brand New Day collected ₹9.95 crore over the weekend, continuing its run in India after becoming one of the biggest Hollywood performers in the country. The film had previously crossed the ₹500 crore gross mark in India, setting a new benchmark for Hollywood releases in the market.
Just behind it, Insidious: Out of the Further collected ₹9.85 crore. The latest entry in the long-running horror franchise opened alongside several other releases and managed to stay close to Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Its weekend performance also comes after a strong opening in international markets, where it debuted at No. 2 at the North American box office.
Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey continued its theatrical run with ₹5.28 crore in India. The film remains one of the stronger Hollywood holdovers in the market and has continued to attract audiences even several weeks into its run. Internationally, The Odyssey has also remained a major performer, with its global box office continuing to grow.
Batwara 1947, which opened alongside Awarapan 2 during the Independence Day period, collected another ₹3.20 crore during the weekend. The Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta-led period drama had opened to ₹26.50 crore in its first weekend and has since seen its collections slow down considerably.
In eighth place, PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie collected ₹2.06 crore. The animated family film continues to find a smaller audience in India while performing alongside a crowded weekend lineup that included releases across multiple languages and genres.
Judaa followed with ₹1.19 crore, while Ram and Leela rounded out the Top 10 with ₹0.92 crore. Both films remained well below the major performers at the weekend box office, with the gap between the top titles and the lower half of the chart remaining significant.
One of the weekend’s biggest disappointments was 7 Dogs, the Saudi Arabian action thriller featuring Salman Khan and Sanjay Dutt alongside Egyptian stars Karim Abdel Aziz and Ahmed Ezz. Despite its large international scale, reported $40 million budget and high-profile Indian cast, the film managed only ₹0.24 crore in India over the weekend.
The result is particularly striking considering 7 Dogs had performed strongly in its original Middle Eastern release. The film earned more than $7 million in its opening frame across the Middle East and North Africa and had been reported as one of the strongest Arabic-language openings in the region. However, its Indian theatrical run has been dramatically different, with reports describing its opening in the country as a major disappointment.
Overall, the August 21–23 weekend belonged to Irumudi, which comfortably led the Indian box office with ₹50.50 crore. Awarapan 2 and Bethlehem Kudumba Unit also delivered strong numbers, while Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Insidious: Out of the Further and The Odyssey continued to hold their ground. At the other end of the chart, 7 Dogs became the weekend’s most notable underperformer in India despite its international ambitions and star power.
