After months of uncertainty, legal proceedings, and repeated delays, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s highly anticipated film Jana Nayagan has finally cleared its biggest hurdle. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has granted the film an ‘A’ (Adults Only) certificate, paving the way for its long-awaited theatrical release. Industry reports now indicate that the film is on course to arrive in cinemas on July 24, ending a certification saga that has dominated headlines for much of the year.
The CBFC approval comes after an unusually prolonged review process that delayed the film’s original release plans. Jana Nayagan was initially expected to hit theatres during the Pongal 2026 season, but the certification process stretched for several months as the film underwent multiple rounds of examination and legal scrutiny before finally receiving clearance.
According to reports, the film has been certified with a runtime of 183 minutes (3 hours and 3 minutes) and has been awarded an ‘A’ certificate after the CBFC recommended 12 modifications. The reported changes include edits to politically sensitive dialogues, references linked to Vijay’s political party, and a handful of visual sequences. While the makers have not officially detailed every modification, the certification brings an end to one of the most closely watched censorship battles in recent Tamil cinema.
The prolonged delay had prompted the producers to seek legal intervention after the certification process remained unresolved for months. The matter eventually reached the Madras High Court, with the filmmakers arguing that the delay was affecting the film’s release plans and business commitments. Following months of proceedings, the certification has now been completed, allowing the film to move toward its theatrical rollout.
The clearance is particularly significant because Jana Nayagan is widely expected to be Vijay’s final film as a lead actor before focusing entirely on his political career following his election as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. That alone has made the project one of the most anticipated Tamil releases of recent years, with fans eager to watch what is being billed as the actor’s farewell to cinema.
With the certification now secured, the release machinery has quickly gone into motion. Multiple trade reports indicate that July 24 is now the target date for the worldwide theatrical release, and overseas distributors have already begun preparations. Canadian distributor York Cinemas has confirmed the July 24 release in its territory, while advance bookings have reportedly opened in the United Kingdom, signaling that the international rollout is moving ahead after months of uncertainty.
The domestic release is also expected to be one of the biggest Tamil releases of the year. Industry reports suggest the film could open on around 1,000 screens across Tamil Nadu, although the final screen count is expected to be confirmed closer to release. Marketing activities, including television promotions, outdoor campaigns, and ticketing partnerships, are also expected to intensify now that the certification process has concluded.
The road to release has not been without further complications. During the certification delay, a full HD version of the film was leaked online, with clips circulating across piracy platforms and social media. Authorities later informed the Madras High Court that the leaked version had allegedly been viewed by more than 1.2 crore people through illegal channels, making it one of the most significant piracy incidents involving a major Indian film this year. Despite the leak, the producers continued to pursue a theatrical release rather than altering their distribution plans.
Directed by H. Vinoth, Jana Nayagan features an ensemble cast led by Vijay alongside Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Prakash Raj, Priyamani, Gautham Vasudev Menon, and Narain. The film is produced by KVN Productions, with music composed by Anirudh Ravichander and cinematography by Sathyan Sooryan. Reports have also suggested that the film draws inspiration from the Telugu film Bhagavanth Kesari, although the makers have not officially described it as a direct remake.
The film’s ‘A’ certificate has also generated discussion among fans, many of whom believed it would be Vijay’s first adults-only certified film. However, it is actually the second film in his career to receive an ‘A’ rating after Bagavathi in 2002.
For the makers, the CBFC approval represents the final major regulatory hurdle before release. After months of legal proceedings, certification delays, and piracy concerns, Jana Nayagan is now poised to make its long-awaited theatrical debut. If the current plans remain unchanged, audiences around the world will finally get to watch what is expected to be Vijay’s farewell performance on the big screen when the film releases on July 24.
