Australian actor Jason Clarke has joined the cast of Supermax, the upcoming action thriller from Amazon MGM Studios and Miramax. His addition brings another acclaimed performer to a project that has steadily assembled a high-profile ensemble. Known for portraying composed, authoritative figures in high-pressure situations, Clarke appears to be a natural fit for the film’s tense, prison-set story.
Over the past two decades, Clarke has built a career defined by consistency rather than conventional movie-star status. After beginning in Australian television and film, he gradually transitioned into international productions, earning a reputation as a dependable character actor capable of disappearing into complex roles rather than dominating them. That versatility ultimately paved the way to Hollywood.
His breakthrough came through a series of acclaimed films that showcased his range. In Zero Dark Thirty, Clarke played a CIA operative involved in the hunt for Osama bin Laden, delivering a restrained yet commanding performance. He later entered blockbuster territory with Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, bringing emotional depth to the conflict between humans and the emerging ape civilization. Performances in Everest, Mudbound and First Man further established his ability to excel in ensemble dramas built around survival, adversity and historical events.
More recently, Clarke appeared in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer as Roger Robb, the government attorney who aggressively questioned J. Robert Oppenheimer during his security clearance hearing. Although his screen time was limited, Clarke’s measured intensity left a lasting impression, reinforcing the qualities that have become hallmarks of his career. Those same strengths make his casting in Supermax particularly fitting, given the film’s setting and emphasis on authority, tension and psychological conflict.
Supermax is directed by David Gordon Green from a screenplay by David Weil and David J. Rosen. The film stars Will Smith and AnnaSophia Robb as FBI agents investigating a murder that appears impossible inside a maximum-security prison. Jaafar Jackson, following his breakout performance in Michael, also recently joined the cast in what is described as a pivotal role.
The film is produced by Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman alongside Will Smith and Adam Fishbach for Westbrook Studios, with Amazon MGM Studios and Miramax backing the project. Supermax is expected to premiere globally on Prime Video.
Details about Clarke’s character remain under wraps. However, his addition further strengthens a cast built around experienced dramatic performers. Given his track record of portraying complex authority figures, Clarke’s role is expected to add another layer of intensity to a film already centered on mystery, confinement and high-stakes suspense.
