Jeremy Renner and Josh Brolin Team Up for True-Story Thriller A Speck in the Sea

Jeremy Renner and Josh Brolin to Star in Survival Thriller A Speck in the Sea

Jeremy Renner and Josh Brolin are set to star in A Speck in the Sea, a survival thriller based on the extraordinary real-life experience of Montauk lobster fisherman John Aldridge, who fell overboard into the Atlantic in 2013. Brolin will portray Aldridge, while Renner will play his close friend and fishing partner, Anthony Sosinski. The film will be directed by Academy Award winner Orlando von Einsiedel, with an Oscar-nominated screenplay by Jeff Pope. 193, a Legendary Entertainment company, is handling international sales at the American Film Market (AFM).

The casting brings two actors known for their roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe together in a story rooted in real events. Brolin is widely recognised for playing Thanos, while Renner portrayed Clint Barton, also known as Hawkeye. In A Speck in the Sea, however, the two actors move away from the large-scale action associated with those characters to portray two working fishermen whose lives were changed by a night at sea.

The incident at the centre of the film took place in July 2013. John Aldridge was working aboard the fishing boat Anna Mary off the coast of Long Island when he fell overboard into the Atlantic. His friend and fishing partner, Anthony Sosinski, was asleep below deck and did not immediately realise that Aldridge was missing. When Sosinski woke up and discovered that his friend had disappeared, he helped set a search operation in motion.

While efforts to locate Aldridge spread across several states, he was left alone in the open Atlantic, struggling to stay afloat and survive. The rescue effort brought together the Coast Guard, members of the local fishing community, family members and others determined to find him. The film will follow both sides of the incident: Aldridge’s efforts to remain alive in the water and Sosinski’s attempt to organise the search and bring his friend home.

This dual perspective gives the story a narrative structure that extends beyond the circumstances of the accident itself. While Aldridge faced the immediate challenge of surviving in open water, Sosinski was confronted with the uncertainty of not knowing what had happened to his friend and the difficulty of mobilising a search across a vast area. Their experiences form the two central strands of the film, bringing together the struggle for survival and the efforts to secure a rescue.

A Speck in the Sea draws on the real-life account shared by Aldridge and Sosinski in their book of the same name. The book recounts the incident and the rescue, providing the foundation for the film’s screenplay. The story also places emphasis on the people who contributed to the search, including those whose familiarity with the sea and cooperation became important to the rescue effort.

The film’s creative team brings together filmmakers with experience in telling stories based on real people and events. Director Orlando von Einsiedel won an Academy Award for the documentary short The White Helmets and received an Oscar nomination for the feature documentary Virunga. Screenwriter Jeff Pope was nominated for an Academy Award for his screenplay for Philomena. For A Speck in the Sea, Pope has adapted the experiences of Aldridge and Sosinski for the screen.

Mark Bauch is producing the film for One Day’s Walk, alongside Jonathan Eirich for Rideback. 193, a company under Legendary Entertainment, is representing the project for international sales at AFM. CAA Media Finance and WME Independent are jointly handling North American rights. The project is being introduced to potential buyers at the market, giving distributors an opportunity to assess its cast, creative team and underlying true story.

A release date and production schedule have not yet been announced. The makers have also not disclosed additional cast members, filming dates or theatrical release plans. The AFM announcement therefore marks the project’s introduction to the international film market, with further details about its production and distribution still to come.

For Renner and Brolin, the film represents a different kind of collaboration from their best-known work in the Marvel franchise. Rather than portraying superheroes in a fictional conflict, they will take on the roles of two fishermen caught up in an unexpected and life-threatening event. Their characters’ friendship and the circumstances surrounding Aldridge’s disappearance form the emotional centre of the story.

With von Einsiedel directing Pope’s screenplay, A Speck in the Sea will bring the 2013 incident to the screen through the experiences of John Aldridge and Anthony Sosinski. The film’s focus remains on the real people involved, the struggle to survive and the search that brought the two friends’ story to international attention.
