Suriya’s blockbuster fantasy action drama Karuppu is all set to make its digital debut. After a highly successful theatrical run, the Tamil-language hit will premiere exclusively on Amazon Prime Video on June 12, 2026, making it available to audiences worldwide.
Released in cinemas on May 15, 2026, Karuppu emerged as one of the biggest success stories of the year. The film not only became the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2026 but also delivered the biggest box office success of Suriya’s career. According to reports, the film earned an impressive ₹301.8 crore worldwide during its theatrical run, becoming one of only a handful of Tamil films to cross the ₹300 crore mark globally.
The achievement is particularly significant for Suriya, whose previous highest-grossing film was Singam 2, which reportedly earned around ₹120 crore worldwide. With Karuppu, the actor has more than doubled his previous box office record and delivered one of the biggest commercial successes in Tamil cinema in recent years.
Karuppu, which translates to “Black,” is a 2026 Indian Tamil-language fantasy action film directed by RJ Balaji. The screenplay was co-written by Balaji alongside Rathna Kumar, Ashwin Ravi Chandran, Rahul Raj, T.S. Gopi Krishnan, and Karan Aravind Kumar. The film was produced by Dream Warrior Pictures.
The film stars Suriya, Trisha Krishnan, and RJ Balaji in leading roles alongside Indrans, Natty Subramaniam, Swasika, and Supreeth Reddy. At the heart of the story is the guardian deity Vettai Karuppu, who disguises himself as a lawyer in order to fight corruption within a court system that is exploiting a young girl waiting for a liver transplant. Blending fantasy elements with action and social commentary, the film explores themes of justice, morality, institutional failure, and individual resistance while delivering a larger-than-life commercial entertainer.
The project was originally announced in October 2024 under the tentative title Suriya 45, marking the actor’s 45th film in a leading role. The official title Karuppu was unveiled in June 2025 ahead of its release.
Prime Video confirmed that the film will stream in its original Tamil version while also being available in dubbed Hindi, Malayalam, and Kannada versions. A Telugu version, retitled Veerabhadrudu, will also be available for streaming. The digital premiere arrives roughly four weeks after the film’s theatrical release, allowing the film to capitalize on the momentum generated during its successful box office run.
Speaking about the OTT release, Suriya expressed gratitude for the audience response the film received in theaters. “I am truly humbled by the immense love and appreciation Karuppu has received at the box office,” the actor said in a statement.
The release also continues Suriya’s successful association with Prime Video, which previously streamed some of his most acclaimed films, including Jai Bhim and Soorarai Pottru.
Producer S.R. Prabhu highlighted the film’s blend of rooted storytelling and commercial entertainment while expressing confidence that the film would continue its success on streaming. He stated that Karuppu “celebrates the spirit of rooted storytelling while delivering the scale and emotion of a truly commercial entertainer” and predicted that it would enjoy the same blockbuster success on streaming that it enjoyed in theaters.
Manish Menghani, Director and Head of Content Licensing at Prime Video India, also emphasized the platform’s long-standing relationship with Suriya’s films. “Prime Video has been the preferred home to some of Suriya’s most acclaimed and impactful movies. With Karuppu, we continue this association, delivering larger-than-life storytelling, high-octane action, and intense performances from powerhouse talent,” he said.
Critically, Karuppu received generally positive reviews, though responses were not entirely unanimous. The film was widely praised for Suriya’s performance, its emotional first half, visual scale, and powerful background score. However, some critics felt the narrative became uneven in the latter portions, citing fan-service moments and certain logical inconsistencies.
The Indian Express awarded the film 3 out of 5 stars, praising Suriya’s commitment and several whistle-worthy moments while noting that the story loses some of its momentum midway through. The Times of India observed that the film shines when operating as a courtroom drama but occasionally becomes less focused when leaning into its fantasy elements. Meanwhile, India Today described it as a nostalgic yet uneven ride, commending Suriya’s performance while pointing to plot loopholes.
Despite the mixed opinions on certain aspects of the screenplay, audiences embraced the film in large numbers, turning Karuppu into one of the year’s biggest theatrical successes. With its Prime Video premiere now confirmed, the fantasy action drama is set to reach an even wider audience and continue its successful journey beyond the big screen.
