The Cast of Skeletons Keeps Growing as Keith Carradine Joins Brie Larson’s Horror Film

Keith Carradine has joined Brie Larson, John Goodman, and Kyle Gallner in Sony's upcoming horror film Skeletons, directed by JT Mollner.

The cast of Skeletons, Sony’s upcoming creature horror film directed by JT Mollner, has added another strong name. Keith Carradine has officially joined the project, which already features Brie Larson, Kyle Gallner, John Goodman, and several others. The announcement came on July 14 and continues what has been a steady and exciting string of casting news for one of horror’s most anticipated upcoming projects.

Skeletons is described as a modern take on the creature horror genre, told from the perspective of a young boy who slowly begins to discover that his beloved parents are hiding a deeply disturbing secret about his mother’s true nature. The premise is deliberately unsettling, a story built around the horror of realizing that the people you love most are not who you thought they were.

The film is based on a short story by Phillip Fracassi, and the screenplay was originally written by Brian Duffield, who also wrote Whalefall. Director JT Mollner will rewrite the script before production begins.

Skeletons now has a genuinely impressive cast coming together. Brie Larson and Kyle Gallner lead the film, and they are joined by John Goodman, who previously starred in 10 Cloverfield Lane. Willa Fitzgerald, who appeared in Mollner’s previous film Strange Darling, is also in the cast, as is Ione Skye, known from the recent Anaconda, and Irish actor Daithi O’Haragain from the series Trespasses. Keith Carradine is the newest addition to this group.

Keith Carradine is the son of legendary Hollywood actor John Carradine and has built an extensive career of his own across more than five decades. His early work includes Robert Altman’s Thieves Like Us and Nashville, both considered classics of 1970s American cinema. More recently, he has been known to television audiences through roles in Dexter, Fear the Walking Dead, and Fargo. He also appeared in the action film Cowboys & Aliens. His addition to Skeletons brings significant experience and screen presence to the cast.

JT Mollner directed Strange Darling in 2024, a stylish, non-linear crime thriller that earned strong reviews and established him as one of the more exciting voices in genre filmmaking. Skeletons will be his follow-up, and the fact that he is bringing Willa Fitzgerald and Kyle Gallner along from Strange Darling suggests he works closely with actors he trusts. Apart from directing, Mollner has written the screenplay for the upcoming Stephen King adaptation The Long Walk, which tells you how seriously the industry has taken his work as a writer. He also has a Stephen King adaptation of The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon in development, as well as a Texas Chainsaw Massacre series for A24.

Skeletons is being produced through FilmNation Entertainment’s production label Infrared, J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions, and Assemble Media. The producing team includes Drew Simon, J.J. Abrams, Jon Cohen, and Jack Heller. Executive producers are Caitlin de Lisser-Ellen for Assemble, Brian Duffield, Roy Lee, and Steven Schneider, with Brie Larson and Phillip Fracassi also serving as executive producers. It is a strong and experienced team surrounding what sounds like a very ambitious horror project. Sony Pictures will distribute the film.

Brie Larson is best known for her Oscar-winning role in Room and her role as Captain Marvel in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Skeletons is part of a stretch of interesting choices she has been making outside the franchise world, leaning into character-driven and genre-specific projects that show a side of her work audiences have not seen as much of.

Infrared President of Production Drew Simon spoke about the casting directly, saying he is beyond excited to see Larson take on this role, describing it as frightening, emotionally charged, and very different from anything she has done before. He believes she will bring something unforgettable to the screen.

No release date has been confirmed for Skeletons yet. But with this cast, this director, and this producing team all in place, it is already one of the more compelling horror projects currently in development at any studio.
