The Conjuring franchise continues to expand, with German actor Matthias Schweighöfer joining the cast of the upcoming prequel The Conjuring: First Communion. The latest installment in the long-running horror series is scheduled to arrive in theaters on September 10, 2027.
Schweighöfer’s role has not yet been revealed. The film will center on younger versions of renowned paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, with Garret Wareing and Amanda Fix portraying the iconic couple during the early years of their relationship.
Wareing is a series regular on Netflix’s Ransom Canyon and recently appeared in Lionsgate’s The Long Walk, while Fix is known for Orphan Black: Echoes and the Duffer Brothers’ upcoming Netflix series Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen. The casting also introduces new actors as the young Warrens following The Conjuring: Last Rites, which featured Orion Smith and Madison Lawlor portraying younger versions of the characters in flashback sequences.
Plot details remain under wraps, although the prequel is expected to explore the formative years of Ed and Lorraine Warren’s partnership. Rodrigue Huart is directing from a screenplay by Richard Naing and Ian Goldberg. It remains unclear whether Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, who have portrayed the Warrens throughout the main Conjuring films, will appear in the prequel. Peter Safran is producing through The Safran Company, with John Rickard, Natalia Safran, and Romel Adam serving as executive producers.
Schweighöfer has been one of Germany’s most prominent actors, directors, and producers for more than two decades. International audiences know him best as Ludwig Dieter in Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead and its prequel Army of Thieves, which he also directed. He most recently appeared in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer as physicist Werner Heisenberg.
The Conjuring: First Communion will become the tenth installment in the Conjuring Universe, one of the most commercially successful horror franchises ever created. Launched with James Wan’s The Conjuring in 2013, the series quickly expanded beyond the Warren family’s investigations into interconnected spin-offs including the Annabelle trilogy, The Nun films, and The Curse of La Llorona. Together, the films have generated more than $2.7 billion at the worldwide box office, making the Conjuring Universe the highest-grossing horror franchise in cinema history.
Unlike many long-running horror franchises, the Conjuring Universe has maintained consistent commercial success across multiple storylines while building a shared supernatural mythology inspired by the real-life case files of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. The franchise has repeatedly produced box-office hits, with The Nun becoming its highest-grossing entry for several years before The Conjuring: Last Rites delivered a franchise-record $84 million domestic opening and a $194 million worldwide debut, setting a new benchmark for the series and one of the biggest horror openings ever recorded.
First Communion now takes the franchise back to the beginning, exploring the early lives of Ed and Lorraine Warren before they became the world’s most famous paranormal investigators. The prequel also marks the first major Conjuring film to feature younger actors in the lead roles, signaling the next chapter for a universe that Warner Bros. and New Line continue to expand across both film and television.
Beyond the upcoming film, a television series set within the Conjuring Universe is also reportedly in development. Franchise producer Peter Safran has previously indicated there are still many stories left to tell across both film and television, as New Line continues to expand one of horror’s most successful cinematic universes.
With Matthias Schweighöfer now joining the cast alongside Garret Wareing and Amanda Fix, The Conjuring: First Communion continues to assemble a strong ensemble for its exploration of Ed and Lorraine Warren’s earliest paranormal investigations. The prequel is currently slated to arrive in theaters on September 10, 2027.
