After becoming a major global box-office success and crossing $1 billion worldwide, Michael sequel may now move into the part of Michael Jackson’s life its first film left unexplored. The 2026 biopic ended with the Bad era, years before the child sexual abuse allegations that became a major part of public discussion around Michael Jackson’s later life. Now, as Lionsgate moves ahead with a sequel, Jaafar Jackson has said the next film could provide more insight into those allegations from Michael Jackson’s point of view and help “let his voice be heard.” That new development is why the sequel has become an important cinema story now.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua, Michael followed Michael Jackson’s journey from his early years with the Jackson 5 to his rise as one of the world’s biggest solo stars. Jaafar Jackson, Michael Jackson’s nephew, played the singer. The film concluded around the Bad era in 1988, leaving the following decades outside its story. That ending became significant because the first public allegations against Michael Jackson emerged in 1993, five years later.
The period left out of the first film was not a small part of Michael Jackson’s life. His later years included further musical success, major performances, intense media attention and serious allegations that would become central to public discussion about his legacy. For audiences, the ending of Michael therefore left an important question: would a second film eventually continue the story into those years?
The sequel could also present a new challenge for Jaafar Jackson as an actor. In the first film, his performance focused on portraying Michael Jackson’s rise from a young performer to a global superstar. If the second film moves into the later years, Jaafar Jackson would potentially have to portray a more mature Michael Jackson facing greater fame, pressure, public scrutiny and personal controversy. That shift could make the sequel a very different acting challenge from the first film.
Earlier reports also revealed that the first film had originally planned to go further. Material connected to the allegations was reportedly included in an earlier version. However, legal issues involving a settlement agreement connected to Jordan Chandler meant the production had to be reworked. The original third act was removed, and new scenes were filmed, resulting in the story ending before that period.
That history gives Jaafar Jackson’s latest comments greater importance. Speaking about the proposed sequel, Jaafar Jackson said he hoped a second film could give audiences “more insight” into the allegations from Michael Jackson’s point of view. He also spoke about the importance of allowing his uncle’s voice to be heard. His comments do not reveal exactly how the sequel will approach those events, but they offer a clearer idea of the direction he hopes it will take.
Lionsgate has confirmed that work on a second Michael film is progressing. The studio has indicated that previously filmed material, including major musical sequences, could be used in the follow-up. Production is reportedly being planned for late 2026 or early 2027, although the studio has not announced a final release date or detailed storyline.
The success of the first film also raises the stakes for what comes next. Michael proved there was major global interest in seeing Michael Jackson’s life brought to cinemas, but the sequel would have a very different story to tell. The first film focused largely on the journey towards superstardom. The next chapter could explore what happened after Michael Jackson had already become one of the most famous performers in the world.
