Other Mommy Eyes $27.5 Million Opening Weekend as The Social Reckoning Tracks Towards $6 Million

Other Mommy and The Social Reckoning lead new releases in North American box office projections.

Universal’s Other Mommy is projected to lead the North American box office this weekend, with the horror film expected to earn $27.5 million over its first three days. Sony’s The Social Reckoning, meanwhile, is tracking towards a $6 million opening, according to Friday estimates reported by Deadline.

Both films began their theatrical runs on October 9. Thursday previews generated $3.6 million for Other Mommy and $650,000 for The Social Reckoning. These early figures form the basis of the current weekend projections, with rankings subject to change as additional ticket sales are reported.

Directed by Rob Savage, Other Mommy stars Jessica Chastain as Ursula, alongside the sinister entity known as Other Mommy. The story follows young Bela, whose family is unsettled by a presence in their home that looks exactly like her mother. Based on Josh Malerman’s novel Incidents Around the House, the film centres on Bela’s frightening encounters with the entity and its attempts to persuade her to let it in.

Other Mommy earned $3.6 million from Thursday previews across 2,850 locations, with screenings beginning at 2 p.m. Friday estimates put its opening-day earnings at $12.3 million, with the film projected to collect $27.5 million over the three-day weekend across 3,365 theatres.

The latest projection is above the $20 million opening the studio had initially expected. Produced by Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, the film has a reported production budget of $19 million.

Written and directed by Aaron Sorkin, The Social Reckoning follows Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen and journalist Jeff Horwitz as they investigate the social media platform. Mikey Madison plays Haugen, Jeremy Allen White portrays Horwitz, and Jeremy Strong plays Mark Zuckerberg. The film continues the story associated with The Social Network, shifting its focus to the platform’s impact and the people who challenged it.

The sequel earned $650,000 in Thursday previews from 2,368 locations, with screenings beginning at 4 p.m. Friday estimates put its opening-day earnings at $2.3 million, with a projected three-day total of $6 million from 2,606 theatres. The estimate is below the earlier expectation of approximately $7 million.

The film has a reported production budget of $30 million after incentives. For comparison, the original The Social Network opened to $22.4 million in North America and eventually earned $224 million worldwide.

Both films also opened in cinemas across the UK and Ireland on October 9. Screen Daily listed The Social Reckoning in 607 locations and Other Mommy in 523 venues, placing both releases in the same weekend’s theatrical lineup.

The two new releases are competing with established titles, including Verity, Resident Evil and Heart of the Beast. Verity is projected to take second place with an estimated $13.3 million for the weekend, bringing its domestic total to approximately $55.6 million.

Resident Evil is projected to rank third, with Friday earnings estimated at around $7 million and its domestic total approaching $137 million. Heart of the Beast is expected to take fourth place, with an estimated $6.2 million on Friday and a domestic total of approximately $49 million.
