Park Chan-wook Casts McConaughey, Pascal, Butler

Park Chan-wook has lined up a major ensemble for his next feature, The Brigands of Rattlecreek, with Matthew McConaughey, Austin Butler, Pedro Pascal and Tang Wei set to star. The film is positioned as an English-language Western thriller and brings together a mix of Hollywood and international talent under one of contemporary cinema’s most distinctive directors.

Described as a story of vengeance and retribution set in the American West, the film places Park Chan-wook within a genre space that differs from many of his earlier works, while retaining thematic elements that have defined his filmmaking. The narrative is expected to explore violence, memory, family, and the consequences of human actions, building on recurring ideas present across his body of work.

The screenplay has been written by S. Craig Zahler, known for Bone Tomahawk and Dragged Across Concrete. The script has had a long development trajectory, first appearing on the Black List in 2006 as one of the most notable unproduced screenplays in Hollywood. Over time, the project has evolved through multiple stages before arriving at its current form under Park’s direction.

The project also marks a return to the material for Matthew McConaughey, who had previously been linked to the film when Amazon acquired rights to the script in 2019. With Park Chan-wook now directing, McConaughey joins the confirmed cast alongside Austin Butler, Pedro Pascal, and Tang Wei, forming a multi-generational and internationally recognized lineup.

Production will be led by Park Chan-wook under his banner Moho Film, alongside producer Bradley J. Fischer. Executive producers on the project include Back Jisun, Mike Medavoy, and Georgia Kacandes. The production structure brings together a team with experience across both independent and large-scale international projects.

International sales for the film will be handled by 193, the company founded by Patrick Wachsberger. The project is expected to be introduced to buyers at the Cannes Film Festival, positioning it as a key title in the market lineup.

Park Chan-wook’s filmography includes works such as Oldboy, The Handmaiden and Stoker, reflecting a career that has moved across languages and storytelling traditions. While many of his earlier films are rooted in South Korean settings, his work has also extended into English-language cinema, with Stoker marking his first such project.

The Brigands of Rattlecreek is described as a passion project for the director, bringing together long-developing material with a large-scale cast and an international production setup. The Western setting introduces a new visual and narrative framework, while continuing to engage with themes that have been central to Park’s storytelling.

At this stage, further details regarding production timelines, release plans, and additional casting have not been formally announced. The current update establishes the core creative team, cast, and market positioning of the film, with more information expected as the project progresses.

With an ensemble led by McConaughey, Butler, Pascal, and Tang Wei, and direction from Park Chan-wook, The Brigands of Rattlecreek moves forward as a high-profile international project, combining established talent with a genre-driven narrative set in the American West.
