Park Hoon-jung’s Tristes Tropiques Secures New Distribution Deals Across North America and Europe

Park Hoon-jung’s Tristes Tropiques secures international distribution deals across North America and Europe.

South Korean filmmaker Park Hoon-jung’s upcoming action noir Tristes Tropiques has secured another round of international distribution deals, expanding its reach across North America, Europe and Asia ahead of its theatrical release in South Korea. Well Go USA has acquired the film for North America, while Swift Distribution has picked up French-speaking territories. The latest agreements were announced by international sales company Finecut, which is presenting the title to buyers at the American Film Market.

The new deals also include Alfa Pictures for Spain and Andorra, Blue Swan Entertainment for Italy, and CaiChang International, Inc. for Taiwan. These sales add to previously announced agreements with Splendid Film for Germany, Austria and Switzerland; Media4Fun for Poland; Multivision India for the Indian subcontinent; PT Prima Cinema Multimedia for Indonesia; and Izagur Media for Mongolia. Together, the agreements give the film a distribution footprint across several international markets before its November 25 theatrical opening in South Korea. Release dates for the newly acquired territories have not yet been announced.

The latest round of sales brings the film to distributors in several distinct markets, extending its potential reach beyond its domestic release. North America and French-speaking territories represent two significant additions to the distribution map, while the agreements covering Spain, Andorra, Italy and Taiwan further expand its presence across Europe and Asia. Finecut continues to handle international sales and is presenting the project to prospective buyers at the American Film Market.

Tristes Tropiques is the latest genre film from Park, whose previous directorial credits include New World, The Witch films, Night in Paradise and The Childe. The new project is described as an assassin noir set around a group of young killers trained by a figure known as Master, who exercises absolute control over a tropical rainforest. When Master is found dead, the group loses the authority that has governed its existence. With the identity of the killer unknown, suspicion spreads among the assassins, and their trust in one another begins to break down.

The premise places the film within the crime and action territory that has featured in Park’s earlier work, while its isolated rainforest setting provides the backdrop for a story centred on power, control and mistrust. The death of the group’s central figure creates uncertainty among the trained killers, with the search for the person responsible threatening to fracture the relationships within the group. Further plot details have not been disclosed in the information released by the sales company.

The cast brings together South Korean and Taiwanese performers. Lee Sin-young, known for Rebound, leads the ensemble alongside Park Yu-rim, who appeared in Drive My Car, Kim Myung-min, known for Your Honor, and Park Hae-soo, recognised internationally for Squid Game. Taiwanese actors Austin Lin, Chen Yi-Wen and Wang Po-Chieh also feature in the film. Their previous credits include 96 Minutes, The Pig, the Snake and the Pigeon, and Eye of the Storm, respectively. The combination of performers from South Korea and Taiwan gives the project an international cast ahead of its release in multiple territories.

The North American acquisition also continues an existing relationship between Well Go USA and Park. The distributor previously handled the filmmaker’s The Witch films and The Childe in the territory. Well Go USA president and CEO Doris Pfardrescher said the company was pleased to continue working with the director, adding that the film takes his combination of style, emotion and hard-hitting action to a new level. The acquisition therefore brings Park and the distributor together again on a project that continues the filmmaker’s association with genre-driven cinema.

Swift Distribution president and CEO Didier Costet also described the acquisition as “an exciting new cinematic journey”. The company’s deal covers French-speaking territories, adding another European distribution partner to the film’s growing international sales list. The individual theatrical release plans for these markets have not been announced.

Park wrote and directed Tristes Tropiques, which was produced by his company Gold Moon Pictures, with Studio&New co-producing. Mindmark Inc., the creative content studio of Shinsegae Group, presents the film. Finecut is handling its international sales and continues to take the project to buyers at the American Film Market.

The film has also built a presence on the international festival circuit. It received the Silver Raven Award in the International Competition at the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival. In September, it won the Grand Prix Nouveau Genre Canal+ at Paris’ L’Étrange Festival. It has also been selected as the closing film of the London Korean Film Festival, where it is scheduled to screen with a question-and-answer session with Park.

Before these recent festival awards, the film was invited to the Òrbita section of the 2025 Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival. Its selections at genre-focused events have introduced the project to international audiences ahead of its South Korean release. The London Korean Film Festival screening will provide another opportunity for audiences to see Park’s latest feature, with the planned post-screening conversation offering a chance to hear from the director about the film.

The combination of festival recognition and international distribution agreements has helped establish Tristes Tropiques ahead of its domestic theatrical opening. The awards at Brussels and L’Étrange Festival add to its festival profile, while the closing-film selection in London extends its presence at another international event. The distribution deals, meanwhile, confirm that buyers in multiple territories have acquired the film, although the timing of its theatrical rollout outside South Korea remains to be determined.

With its South Korean release scheduled for November 25, the latest sales agreements extend Tristes Tropiques into additional theatrical markets across North America, Europe and Asia. The film’s growing distribution footprint, international cast and festival recognition place it among Park Hoon-jung’s latest projects to secure an international audience. Finecut continues to present the title to prospective buyers at the American Film Market, while individual release dates for the newly acquired territories remain unannounced.
