Paramount Pictures has set June 11, 2027 as the theatrical release date for the upcoming Possession remake, giving Parker Finn’s new take on Andrzej Żuławski’s 1981 cult horror film a firm place on the 2027 release calendar. Margaret Qualley and Callum Turner lead the film, with Paul Dano also joining the cast.
The new Possession is written and directed by Parker Finn, the filmmaker behind Smile and Smile 2. His involvement brings the project under the direction of a filmmaker already established in contemporary supernatural horror, although the new film moves him beyond the Smile franchise and into a different piece of horror cinema history.
The original Possession, directed by Andrzej Żuławski and released in 1981, centred on a marriage coming apart as the couple’s personal conflict became increasingly intertwined with disturbing supernatural events. For the new version, Qualley and Turner will play Anna and Mark, the central couple originally portrayed by Isabelle Adjani and Sam Neill.
Qualley takes on the role previously played by Adjani, while Turner steps into the role of Mark, the husband at the centre of the story. The casting brings two contemporary performers with different career trajectories to material associated with one of the most distinctive horror films of the early 1980s.
Paul Dano has also joined the cast, although details about his character remain undisclosed. His role therefore remains one of the project’s elements being kept under wraps as production moves forward.
At the centre of the remake is the same basic dramatic framework: a troubled marriage begins to deteriorate while strange and frightening events increasingly enter the couple’s lives. The personal breakdown and supernatural elements develop alongside each other, connecting the relationship drama directly to the film’s horror.
The project has now progressed into production for Paramount Pictures. Recent filming activity in New Jersey has included scenes featuring Qualley, while Robert Pattinson is among the producers working with Finn and other producers through the project’s production banners.
The original Possession has retained a strong cult reputation since its 1981 release, and Finn’s involvement gives the remake a contemporary horror filmmaker with an established track record in supernatural material. His Smile films helped establish his reputation for stories in which ordinary lives become increasingly disturbed by forces that are difficult to explain or control.
With Paramount now setting the film for June 11, 2027, Possession becomes one of the studio’s notable upcoming horror releases. The new film brings together Finn’s contemporary horror sensibility with Żuławski’s original premise, while Qualley, Turner and Dano lead a new cast for the story.
The theatrical release date gives audiences a first firm milestone for the remake, with June 11, 2027 now established as the date for Parker Finn’s Possession to arrive in cinemas.
