The makers of Dada have revealed the first poster of the upcoming Sourav Ganguly biopic. The movie’s first look was unveiled on the cricketer’s 54th birthday.
The poster features Rajkummar Rao as Sourav Ganguly. He is seen recreating one of the most iconic moments from the former Indian cricket team captain’s career.
Rajkummar Rao, one of the most versatile actors in the country and widely known for his commitment to challenging roles, has generated considerable buzz among cricket and movie audiences, who are excited to see him portray such an influential cricket personality.
Sourav Ganguly took a moment on Wednesday to share the poster on X, calling it the “best gift ever.”
“The Best Gift Ever! Can’t wait to see you play my cover drive! #RajkummarRao,”
he wrote in the caption.
Rajkummar, as well as Dada director Vikramaditya Motwane, also shared the poster on their Instagram handles, wishing “our dearest Dada” a very happy birthday. The tagline on the poster aptly reads, “He didn’t just play the game, he changed it.”
In the film’s first look, Rajkummar Rao bears a very striking resemblance to the cricketer, thanks to the similar hairstyle and physique. He has also recreated Ganguly’s distinctive expression during the historic moment that took place 24 years ago, back in 2002, when the Indian cricket team defeated England on their home turf at Lord’s Cricket Ground in London in the NatWest Series final.
The poster recreates Ganguly’s legendary celebration. Rajkummar Rao is seen standing on the iconic Lord’s balcony, waving his jersey enthusiastically in the air as the Indian tricolour flies in the background. The joy, intensity, and aggression on his face instantly remind fans of Ganguly’s unforgettable celebration, making the poster a nostalgic tribute to one of Indian cricket’s defining moments. The impressive performance by the Indian team was made even more memorable by this celebration, which remains one of the most iconic moments in the history of Indian cricket.
Rajkummar also shared the poster on his Instagram Stories and wished Sourav Ganguly a happy birthday. He wrote in the caption:
“Happy Birthday our dearest Dada. @souravganguly #Dada #DadaTheSouravGangulyStory.”
In an interview with PTI in July 2025, Ganguly said Rao was the right choice to portray him.
“I think the right person is doing it… I’ll help him with everything,”
said the former player, who is counted among India’s most successful captains.
The Sourav Ganguly biopic is set to reunite Motwane and Rao 11 years after their 2016 survival drama Trapped. The movie Dada is produced by Luv Ranjan and Ankur Garg’s Luv Films. It also stars Tanya Maniktala as Ganguly’s wife, Dona Ganguly, and Saswata Chatterjee as Ganguly’s father, Chandi Ganguly, among others. The biopic is written by Abhay Koranne, who is also known for writing Bhavesh Joshi Superhero, Rocket Boys, and Matka King.
The biopic is set to release in theatres on 14 May 2027, during the extended Eid weekend.
With its iconic first look and a confirmed release date, Dada – The Sourav Ganguly Story has already emerged as one of the most anticipated sports biopics on the horizon.
