Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil opened at No. 1 at the North American box office over the September 18–20 weekend, collecting an estimated $60 million from 3,684 theatres. The Sony Pictures release posted a strong $16,287 per-theatre average, giving the long-running video game adaptation franchise its biggest opening weekend to date.
The opening is a substantial step up from the previous franchise record. Resident Evil: Afterlife opened to approximately $26 million in 2010, making the new film’s $60 million debut more than double that figure. Afterlife ultimately finished its domestic run at around $60.1 million, meaning the new Resident Evil has already reached roughly the entire domestic lifetime gross of its predecessor in a single weekend.
The new Resident Evil also delivered $48.3 million internationally, taking its worldwide opening to $108.3 million. Deadline reported that the global debut is the biggest in the franchise and also marks Zach Cregger’s largest opening as a filmmaker, surpassing the $70 million worldwide debut reported for Weapons last year.
The strong start also comes after positive reviews and early word of mouth helped the film move beyond its initial tracking range. The reboot, based on Capcom’s video game franchise, is Sony’s latest attempt to relaunch the property after 2021’s Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. Variety noted that the film benefited from the momentum surrounding Cregger, whose previous features Barbarian and Weapons established him as a prominent name in contemporary horror.
The performance gives Cregger another significant theatrical opening after Weapons, which opened to around $43 million domestically in 2025. Resident Evil also arrives after a strong critical response, with the film holding a 95% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of the weekend reporting.
The North American market itself improved considerably compared with the previous weekend. Boxoffice Pro reported a $110.6 million three-day weekend total, up 28.8% from the previous frame and 39.9% from the comparable weekend in 2025. Resident Evil alone accounted for more than half of the Top 10’s weekend gross.
Practical Magic 2 dropped to second place in its second weekend with $12.155 million, falling 59% from its opening. The Warner Bros. sequel has now collected $50.032 million domestically after 10 days. Its worldwide total stood at approximately $76.8 million after adding around $7 million internationally during the weekend.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day remained in third place with $6.5 million, a comparatively modest 23% decline in its eighth weekend. Its domestic total reached $944.502 million, keeping the film within reach of the $1 billion mark in North America.
The Odyssey continued its theatrical run in fourth place, adding $4.9 million in its 10th weekend. The Christopher Nolan film crossed the $600 million domestic milestone, reaching approximately $609.758 million through Sunday.
Coyote vs. Acme held fifth place with $4.512 million, declining 30% in its fourth weekend. The film’s domestic total reached $54.816 million.
Runner ranked sixth with $3.18 million, down 51% in its second weekend, taking its domestic total to nearly $12 million.
Three new or returning titles occupied the remainder of the Top 10. Daniel and the Fiery Furnace opened in seventh place with $3.14 million, while The Transformers: The Movie took eighth with $3.104 million from its 40th-anniversary re-release. The Weight debuted in ninth place with $2.315 million.
Buddy rounded out the Top 10 with $1.929 million, down 47% in its fourth weekend. Its domestic total now stands at approximately $24.833 million.
Overall, the September 18–20 frame generated a substantial improvement for the North American theatrical market, led by the record franchise opening for Resident Evil and continued high grosses from Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey. The weekend’s Top 10 films collectively generated more than $107 million according to the reported individual grosses.
