Dutch filmmaker Roel Reiné, known for directing multiple seasons of Paramount+’s Halo as well as high-octane action productions across television and film, has officially signed on to direct Lunar Colony, a sci-fi thriller being described as a space-age Romeo and Juliet. The project was announced on September 21, with producers Centerboro Productions, Sintered Steel Productions and Convoke Media already presenting it to buyers at the Toronto International Film Festival market last week.
Lunar Colony is set in 2060, nearly three decades after humanity established its first permanent settlement on the Moon. By this point, Earth has grown significantly dependent on lunar resources, creating a complex and politically charged relationship between the two inhabited worlds.
Against that backdrop, the film follows two young people — one from Earth and one a native of the Moon — who fall in love. Their relationship is not simply a personal story. It carries the potential to upend long-standing political loyalties and alliances between the two worlds. Producer Scott Thomas described the film’s central tension as “A love story that could change everything.”
The Romeo and Juliet parallel is central to the film’s emotional premise. Just as Shakespeare’s original placed two young lovers between warring families whose conflict was bigger than either of them, Lunar Colony places its central couple between two worlds with competing interests and deep mutual dependence. The forbidden romance does not just carry personal consequences here; it carries consequences for both societies. The escalation of the stakes from the personal to the political gives the sci-fi setting a dramatic purpose beyond simply serving as a backdrop.
Roel Reiné brings considerable experience with large-scale, effects-driven storytelling to the project. He directed 20 of Halo’s 24 episodes across two seasons, making him one of the most deeply embedded creative voices in the science-fiction production. Before Halo, he directed action films and television across multiple genres. His experience with both intimate character work and expansive world-building is particularly relevant to a film like Lunar Colony, which needs its romantic core to feel as developed as its science-fiction setting.
The film is produced by Scott Thomas of Centerboro Productions, Rachel Rosenblatt of Sintered Steel Productions and Bill Lischak of Convoke Media. Trey Hartell and Michael Golditch of Centerboro are executive producing. The three companies began talking to buyers about the project at the TIFF market, positioning Lunar Colony as a project with international sales potential built around a concept that can travel across markets and languages.
Taking Lunar Colony to the TIFF market at this stage, with a director attached but no cast yet confirmed, reflects a growing industry practice of packaging high-concept genre films before casting is finalised. Reiné’s Halo credentials provide a notable connection to large-scale science fiction and could help generate interest among international distributors before actors are attached.
No cast, production timeline or release date has been confirmed yet. The project is currently being presented to potential buyers and distributors as it moves toward a formal greenlight.
