Rohan Campbell Plans Directorial Debut With Personal Film for Summer 2027

Rohan Campbell plans to make his feature directorial debut with a personal film in summer 2027.

Rohan Campbell is preparing to make his feature directorial debut, with the actor hoping to begin production on his first film in summer 2027. The Below star shared the news in an interview with Film Updates, revealing that the project is awaiting a greenlight and remains a major focus for him.

“I’m trying to direct my own movie in the summer of next year, which I’m really excited about,” Campbell said. Describing the project as “a very personal story,” he added that the team is working to get everything in place before production can move forward. Campbell has not yet revealed the film’s title, storyline or potential cast.

The planned feature marks a new step for the actor, who has built his career through television and film roles, particularly in the horror genre. While details about his directorial debut remain limited, his comments suggest that the project is driven by a story to which he feels personally connected.

Campbell gained wider recognition playing Frank Hardy in Hulu’s The Hardy Boys, which ran for three seasons from 2020 to 2023. He later appeared in David Gordon Green’s Halloween Ends (2022), followed by The Monkey and Silent Night, Deadly Night, both released in 2025.

Speaking about his approach to choosing projects, Campbell highlighted Halloween Ends as an example of a filmmaker following a personal creative vision. The film took an unexpected direction for the long-running horror franchise, placing Campbell’s character, Corey Cunningham, at the centre of its story.

Campbell praised Green’s willingness to make the film he wanted to make, despite the expectations surrounding the franchise.

“I think it’s such a power move for him to be like, this is where my heart’s at, and I want to make this movie,” Campbell said.

The experience has influenced the kinds of projects Campbell wants to pursue. He explained that he is drawn to filmmakers who are deeply committed to their ideas and willing to take creative risks. That outlook could also inform his transition into directing, although he has not shared details about the approach he plans to take with his own film.

Campbell can currently be seen in Netflix’s Below, where he plays Jay Penney, the son of a fisherman played by Josh Hartnett. Created by Jesse McKeown, the series follows a Newfoundland community dealing with a mysterious creature in the surrounding waters.

The show combines its creature-thriller storyline with the relationships and personal struggles of the people living in the town. For Campbell, the project also offered an opportunity to explore questions of identity and his connection to Canada.

In his conversation with Film Updates, the actor described Below as a particularly meaningful experience and praised the warmth of its story and characters. He also spoke about how working on projects with a strong creative identity has become increasingly important to him.

Campbell’s role in the series adds to a growing body of work spanning television, horror films and other genre projects. His planned directorial debut would give him an opportunity to take on a different role in the filmmaking process.

Campbell is also set to appear in Ron Howard’s Alone at Dawn, alongside Adam Driver and Anne Hathaway. The film tells the true story of Air Force Combat Controller John A. Chapman, who was killed during the Battle of Takur Ghar in Afghanistan and later awarded the Medal of Honor. It is scheduled to begin its theatrical rollout on Christmas Day 2027.

For now, Campbell’s directorial debut remains in development, with the proposed summer 2027 production start dependent on receiving a greenlight. Although he has kept the story under wraps, the actor has made clear that the project is an important part of his plans for the next stage of his career.
