San Diego Comic-Con has delivered countless unforgettable moments over the years, but Marvel Studios arguably produced its biggest surprise yet during its Hall H presentation on July 25. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige officially confirmed that Ryan Gosling will play Johnny Blaze, the iconic Ghost Rider, in a new standalone Marvel Studios film directed by Shawn Levy. The announcement immediately became one of the convention’s defining moments, with the film set to arrive in theatres in 2028.
The reveal itself was carefully orchestrated. In the weeks leading up to Comic-Con, entertainment journalist Josh Horowitz repeatedly joked with Feige during interviews about why Gosling had not yet been cast as Ghost Rider, echoing a popular fan campaign that had circulated online for years. During Marvel’s Hall H panel, Horowitz was positioned among the audience and posed the same question one final time. Instead of answering directly, Feige surprised the crowd by inviting Gosling onto the stage, triggering one of the loudest reactions of the convention. Moments later, Marvel Studios made the news official on X, posting: “Ryan Gosling joins the MCU in Marvel Studios’ Ghost Rider, directed by Shawn Levy. Only in theaters 2028.”
Ghost Rider remains one of Marvel Comics’ most distinctive and enduring characters. Created by Gary Friedrich and Mike Ploog, Johnny Blaze first appeared in Marvel Spotlight #5 in 1972 before receiving his own ongoing comic series the following year. The character follows a stunt motorcycle performer who makes a desperate deal with the devil and becomes bonded with the demonic entity Zarathos, transforming into the supernatural Spirit of Vengeance. Wielding hellfire and riding his blazing motorcycle, Ghost Rider has become one of Marvel’s most recognisable antiheroes. While other characters—including Danny Ketch and Robbie Reyes—have also carried the Ghost Rider mantle over the years, Johnny Blaze remains the version most closely associated with the franchise.
The character has previously appeared in live action, most notably in Sony Pictures’ Ghost Rider (2007) and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (2011), with Nicolas Cage portraying Johnny Blaze in both films. Although neither film was embraced by critics, Cage’s performance helped the character build a loyal fan following. A different incarnation of Ghost Rider, Robbie Reyes, was later introduced in Marvel Television’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., played by Gabriel Luna. Gosling’s casting marks the first time Johnny Blaze will appear in a Marvel Studios-produced live-action film, officially bringing one of Marvel’s most popular supernatural heroes into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
For many fans, the announcement felt like the culmination of years of speculation. Gosling has frequently been linked to comic book roles throughout his career and has previously expressed interest in joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although he was once considered for the role of Green Lantern before the part ultimately went to Ryan Reynolds, he instead built one of Hollywood’s most acclaimed filmographies through performances in Drive, La La Land, Blade Runner 2049 and Barbie. Most recently, he led the sci-fi adventure Project Hail Mary, making his move into the MCU one of the biggest casting announcements of the year.
Director Shawn Levy also arrives on the project with significant momentum. Following the global success of Deadpool & Wolverine, Levy has become one of Disney’s most trusted blockbuster filmmakers. He is also directing Star Wars: Starfighter, which stars Gosling, making Ghost Rider their second collaboration. Their reunion gives Marvel one of its highest-profile actor-director pairings as the studio expands its post-Secret Wars slate.
The Ghost Rider announcement formed part of one of Marvel Studios’ biggest Hall H presentations in recent memory. The panel also officially announced Black Panther 3, confirming David Jonsson as the adult T’Challa II while revealing Denzel Washington will make his MCU debut. Fans were also treated to exclusive footage from Avengers: Doomsday, offering the first extended look at Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom and Marvel’s next major crossover event.
With Ryan Gosling now confirmed as Johnny Blaze and Shawn Levy directing, Ghost Rider instantly becomes one of Marvel Studios’ most anticipated upcoming projects. More than a decade after the character’s last big-screen appearance, Marvel is finally bringing the Spirit of Vengeance into the MCU, setting the stage for a new chapter when the film arrives in theatres in 2028.
