The biggest mystery surrounding Spider-Man: Brand New Day has finally been answered. Sadie Sink plays Jean Grey in the film, confirming months of fan speculation that began when the first trailer debuted in March. Now that the film has arrived in theatres, Marvel has officially revealed the actress’ long-rumoured role.
The speculation began with just a brief glimpse in the first trailer. A mystery figure with red hair and a green jacket appeared on screen for only a couple of seconds, but that was enough to ignite widespread theories that Sink had been cast as Jean Grey, one of Marvel Comics’ most iconic mutants. The red hair, the green colour palette and the studio’s refusal to reveal her character only fuelled the speculation.
Marvel remained silent throughout the marketing campaign, while Sink consistently declined to discuss her role in interviews. The secrecy continued through the film’s Hollywood premiere and remained intact until opening day on July 31.
The decision to keep Jean Grey’s identity hidden was deliberate. Director Destin Daniel Cretton explained in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that preserving the surprise was intended to enhance the audience’s experience. He said, “Whoever goes on opening weekend, you are going to have a much cooler experience if you go in not knowing certain things.” He added that audiences would understand why the reveal had been protected once they saw the film.
For those unfamiliar with the character, Jean Grey is one of Marvel’s most influential and emotionally complex heroes. Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, she first appeared in X-Men No. 1 in 1963 as one of Professor X’s original students. A gifted telepath and telekinetic, Jean later became central to the acclaimed Phoenix Saga, in which she bonds with the Phoenix Force, one of the most powerful cosmic entities in Marvel Comics.
Jean Grey has previously been portrayed on screen by Famke Janssen in Fox’s original X-Men films and later by Sophie Turner in the prequel series, most recently in Dark Phoenix (2019). Spider-Man: Brand New Day marks the character’s first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Sink introducing a younger, more grounded version of Jean through a story centred on loneliness, isolation and self-discovery.
Without delving into major plot details, Jean’s journey closely mirrors Peter Parker’s emotional struggle throughout the film. Both characters grapple with isolation, extraordinary abilities they cannot fully control and the burden of feeling different from those around them. Early reviews have highlighted Sink’s performance as one of the film’s emotional standouts, with her storyline laying important groundwork for the MCU’s future X-Men stories.
Sink had previously spoken about her excitement for joining the project. In an earlier interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she said, “Spider-Man has always been my favourite. I love Spider-Man. I love Tom’s Spider-Man especially.” She also revealed that Spider-Man: Brand New Day reunited her with Cretton, who directed one of her earliest films when she was just 14 years old, making the collaboration a full-circle moment for both of them.
Jean Grey’s arrival in the MCU represents a significant milestone for Marvel Studios. With Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled for release in December, already set to feature returning X-Men characters including Patrick Stewart’s Professor X, Ian McKellen’s Magneto and James Marsden’s Cyclops, Sink’s debut officially brings Jean Grey into that expanding universe. Which direction Marvel takes the character next—and whether the Phoenix Force will soon follow—now becomes one of the franchise’s biggest unanswered questions.
