Neve Campbell Confirms Return as Sidney Prescott in Scream 8

Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott, returning in the upcoming horror film Scream 8

Neve Campbell is officially returning to the Scream franchise as Sidney Prescott. The actress has confirmed that she will reprise her role in the upcoming eighth instalment, ending speculation about her involvement in the next chapter of the long-running horror series. Campbell shared the news during an interview with the Associated Press while promoting the second season of her Netflix series Black Doves. Although she did not reveal any details about the film, her confirmation establishes Sidney’s return following the events of Scream 7.

During the conversation, Campbell mentioned Scream 8 while discussing projects currently in development. “Scream 8. That’s in the pipeline as well,” she said. When asked whether she could share anything about the upcoming film or what Sidney might face next, the actress laughed and kept further details under wraps. She then confirmed her participation, adding, “I’ll be in it.” Campbell did not disclose whether the story would continue directly from the previous film or provide any information about other cast members expected to return.

The announcement comes after Scream 7 delivered a strong box-office performance earlier this year. The seventh instalment opened to approximately $97.2 million worldwide, marking the biggest global opening in the franchise’s history. It went on to earn around $208 million worldwide against a reported production budget of $45 million, making it the highest-grossing entry in the series. Following its commercial performance, Spyglass Media Group and Paramount Pictures moved ahead with the development of an eighth film.

Campbell has been closely associated with the franchise since Wes Craven’s original Scream arrived in 1996. She has played Sidney Prescott in six of the seven films, with the character becoming one of the defining figures of the series. However, the actress did not appear in 2023’s Scream VI following a contract dispute. At the time, Campbell explained that the offer she received did not reflect the value she believed she had brought to the franchise. In a 2022 interview with Variety, she said, “The offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise.”

Her decision to step away was a significant moment for the series, particularly given Sidney’s central place in its story. Campbell eventually returned for Scream 7, which brought the character back into focus. Her involvement in the seventh film followed a reported agreement worth $7 million, although the actress has previously described her decision to turn down Scream VI as one she felt was necessary at the time. During a later appearance on CBS Mornings, she reflected that she had initially thought leaving the sixth film might mean saying goodbye to the franchise permanently.

The next instalment is already taking shape behind the scenes. Lilla and Nora Zuckerman, known for their work as the showrunners of Poker Face, have been attached to write the screenplay for Scream 8. The film is expected to have a new director, with Kevin Williamson, who directed Scream 7 and co-wrote the original film, stepping back from the director’s chair while remaining involved as a producer. Spyglass Media Group is developing the project, with Paramount Pictures handling distribution for the franchise.

For now, the story, production schedule, release date and wider cast of Scream 8 remain undisclosed. Campbell’s confirmation is the first major update on her involvement, but she has made it clear that she will not be sharing further details just yet. With Sidney Prescott set to return, the next film will continue the story of one of modern horror’s most recognisable survivors, while leaving audiences waiting to discover what Ghostface has in store for her this time.
