Sinners Dominates Actor Awards, Boosting Oscar Hopes

Sinners wins Best Ensemble and Michael B. Jordan takes lead actor at the 2026 Actor Awards, boosting its Oscar momentum.

Sinners emerged as the biggest winner at the 2026 Actor Awards on Sunday night, taking home the ceremony’s top honor for Best Ensemble in a Motion Picture, while its star Michael B. Jordan was named Male Actor in a Leading Role. The victories significantly strengthen the film’s position in the Oscar race ahead of the Academy Awards on March 15.

The Actor Awards — formerly known as the Screen Actors Guild Awards and presented by SAG-AFTRA — are widely regarded as one of the most important Oscar bellwethers, particularly in the acting categories. With a record-breaking 16 nominations this awards season, Sinners is locked in a tight Best Picture contest with One Battle After Another, which has previously triumphed at the Directors Guild and Producers Guild Awards.

Jordan was recognized for his performance as bootlegging twins in the vampire drama set in the segregated American South. Visibly emotional during his acceptance speech, he thanked fellow actors who had watched him grow up in the industry. “Just being in this room right now with all these people who saw me grow up in front of the camera…I feel the love and support that you’ve always given me and encouraged me to go on and do my best,” he said.

Director Ryan Coogler also made history with the ensemble win. He became the first filmmaker to helm two Best Ensemble winners at the Actor Awards, having previously claimed the top prize with Black Panther. The repeat victory underscores Coogler’s continued influence within the acting community, a voting bloc that makes up the largest branch of the Academy.

While Sinners dominated the marquee category, other major awards helped clarify the shape of this year’s Oscar race. Jessie Buckley won Female Actor in a Leading Role for her portrayal of a grief-stricken mother in Hamnet, strengthening her standing in a competitive Best Actress field. Her victory positions her as a formidable contender heading into Oscar voting.

In supporting categories, two villainous turns prevailed. Sean Penn won Male Actor in a Supporting Role for playing a demented soldier in One Battle After Another, while Amy Madigan was honored as Female Actor in a Supporting Role for her performance as a witch in Weapons. Penn’s win keeps One Battle After Another firmly in the awards conversation despite losing the ensemble prize, while Madigan’s recognition adds momentum to her Oscar campaign.

The Stunt Ensemble award went to Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning, giving blockbuster spectacle a presence at a ceremony otherwise dominated by prestige dramas.

The ensemble category was particularly competitive this year, with nominees including Frankenstein, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, and One Battle After Another. Historically, the Actor Awards ensemble winner has closely aligned with the Academy’s Best Picture choice, making Sinners’ victory especially significant.

The evening also featured a Lifetime Achievement Award presentation to Harrison Ford, who reflected on his decades-long career in an emotional speech. “I’m in a room of actors many of whom are here because they’ve been nominated to receive a prize for their amazing work, while I’m here to receive a prize for being alive,” Ford joked, drawing laughter and applause.

With the Oscars just weeks away, the results from the Actor Awards add fresh intrigue to an already unpredictable season. Sinners’ ensemble win and Jordan’s lead victory position the film as a major Best Picture threat, while Buckley and Penn’s wins further complicate the acting races.

As final voting approaches, the industry now turns its attention to whether the momentum generated by actors’ support will carry through to Oscar night — or whether guild momentum from other branches will tip the balance in favor of One Battle After Another.
