Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues its extraordinary box office run, with the Marvel blockbuster now standing at $2.22 billion worldwide after earning $110 million globally in its fourth weekend. The film is on course to surpass both Titanic and Ne Zha 2 and become the fourth-highest-grossing film of all time, adding another historic milestone to a run that has already broken multiple records.
The film is also reaching a major domestic milestone. On Monday, August 25, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is expected to move past Avengers: Endgame at the North American box office, with approximately $855 million in domestic earnings, making it the second-highest-grossing domestic release of all time.
The moment carries an interesting connection to Titanic. When Avengers: Endgame passed James Cameron’s film at the domestic box office, Cameron and his Lightstorm production company released a congratulatory image showing the Avengers logo sinking the “Ship of Dreams,” accompanied by the message: “An iceberg sank the real Titanic. It took the Avengers to sink my Titanic.” Now, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is preparing to move past the same benchmark.
The current domestic record remains held by Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which has earned $936.6 million. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is projected to finish its domestic run between $915 million and $925 million, meaning it is expected to come close to The Force Awakens while remaining ahead of every other film in the domestic all-time rankings.
The next major milestone is expected internationally. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is currently at $2.22 billion worldwide, approximately $44 million behind Titanic and its $2.264 billion global total. Based on its current pace, the film is expected to pass Titanic around Wednesday, August 27. It would also move ahead of Ne Zha 2, taking the film from sixth place to fourth on the all-time worldwide box office chart.
The all-time worldwide rankings would then place Avatar at the top with $2.923 billion, followed by Avengers: Endgame with $2.798 billion and Avatar: The Way of Water with $2.32 billion, while Spider-Man: Brand New Day would move into fourth place.
The film added another $39 million domestically and $109 million globally over the August 21–23 weekend, securing its fourth consecutive weekend at No. 1 in North America ahead of Insidious: Out of the Further and Mutiny. The fact that the film can still generate $109 million worldwide in a single weekend more than 50 days into its theatrical run highlights the unusual scale and durability of its performance.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day has already accumulated an extraordinary list of records. It holds the record for the biggest domestic opening weekend, with $360.1 million, surpassing Avengers: Endgame’s $357.1 million. It also holds the record for the biggest single opening day in domestic box office history, with $168 million.
The film also crossed $1 billion worldwide faster than any movie other than Avengers: Endgame. It became the fastest film ever to reach $800 million domestically and crossed the $2 billion worldwide mark after just three weekends, making it the second-fastest film to reach that milestone.
The film’s impending Titanic milestone carries its own piece of box office history. George Lucas famously took out a congratulatory trade advertisement when Titanic passed Star Wars in 1998, showing Star Wars characters aboard a sinking ship. Cameron later responded in kind when Endgame overtook his film. With Brand New Day now preparing to pass Titanic, attention will inevitably turn to whether Cameron responds with another congratulatory gesture.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is currently projected to finish its worldwide run at around $2.45 billion. That would put it comfortably ahead of Titanic and Ne Zha 2 in fourth place globally, while its projected domestic total would leave it second all time in North America.
The worldwide record held by Avatar at $2.923 billion remains beyond its reach. However, a fourth-place finish above Titanic, Ne Zha 2 and every Marvel film except Avengers: Endgame would still represent an extraordinary achievement for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. What appeared unlikely just weeks ago is now becoming a reality as the film continues its remarkable theatrical run.
