Steven Soderbergh to Help Matt Reeves Complete The Batman Part II Filming

Steven Soderbergh is stepping in to help complete the final weeks of principal photography on The Batman Part II as director Matt Reeves takes time away from the set to attend to an ongoing family matter. The development follows a temporary pause in production earlier this month.

According to statements attributed to the studio and the filmmakers, Soderbergh will work closely with Reeves and the production team to complete the remaining footage while preserving the director’s vision for the DC Studios sequel.

Soderbergh, the Oscar-winning filmmaker behind Traffic, Erin Brockovich and Ocean’s Eleven, offered to help after learning that Reeves would be unable to remain on set during the final stretch of filming. The two directors will collaborate remotely, with Soderbergh helping oversee the remaining principal photography.

In a statement, DC Studios said Soderbergh had approached Reeves out of admiration for his work and would step in with the studio’s full support. The studio added that both filmmakers would work with the cast and crew to ensure the production continued in accordance with Reeves’ vision.

Soderbergh also expressed his appreciation for Reeves’ work on the first The Batman, describing the film as “intentional, specific and rigorously coherent.” He said his aim was to work with Reeves and the production team to ensure the new footage fitted seamlessly with the material already filmed, allowing Reeves to complete the film as intended.

Following the announcement, Reeves clarified on X that he was not leaving The Batman Part II. He expressed gratitude to Soderbergh for stepping in during a challenging period and helping him complete principal photography. Reeves will remain involved in the production while away from the set.

Under the current arrangement, Soderbergh is expected to work in London as filming continues, while Reeves oversees the process remotely from Los Angeles. Reeves is also expected to take a more active role during post-production when he is ready to return.

Production was temporarily paused in early October to give Reeves time to focus on his family matter. The studio has expressed its support for the director as the film moves forward.

The Batman Part II will see Robert Pattinson return as Bruce Wayne, alongside several familiar faces from the first film. Andy Serkis will reprise his role as Alfred Pennyworth, while Colin Farrell will return as Oswald Cobblepot, also known as the Penguin. Jeffrey Wright is also among the returning cast members.

The sequel will introduce new additions to the franchise, including Scarlett Johansson and Sebastian Stan. Other reported cast members include Brian Tyree Henry, Jayme Lawson, Charles Dance, Gil Perez-Abraham and Sebastian Koch.

Reeves co-wrote and directed The Batman, which was released in March 2022 and earned approximately $772.8 million worldwide. The film established a distinct interpretation of Gotham City and its characters, with Pattinson portraying a darker version of the Caped Crusader.

The sequel has faced several delays since it was announced at CinemaCon in 2022. Initially scheduled for release in October 2026, the film was subsequently pushed to October 2027 before being delayed again to February 2028.

The Batman Part II is currently scheduled to arrive in theatres on February 18, 2028. Although the latest development has changed the production arrangements, the available information does not confirm whether it will affect the film’s release date.

Soderbergh’s involvement is intended to help the production complete principal photography while Reeves remains involved in the process and retains oversight of the film’s creative direction.
