James Gunn has confirmed that principal photography on Superman: Man of Tomorrow has officially wrapped, marking a major production milestone for DC Studios’ next Superman film.
The writer-director and DC Studios co-chief shared the news on social media alongside behind-the-scenes photographs from the final day of filming, bringing the production one step closer to its planned July 9, 2027 theatrical release.
The film follows 2025’s Superman, with David Corenswet returning as Clark Kent and Superman and Nicholas Hoult reprising his role as Lex Luthor. In his message, Gunn described the shoot as a “truly joyful experience” and expressed his “immense gratitude” to the cast and crew who worked on the production.
The photographs offered a brief look at the mood surrounding the wrap. Gunn revealed that Hoult jumped into a lake after the final shot, while another image showed members of the filmmaker’s regular creative team gathered around the video village. The update confirmed that the cameras have stopped rolling and the project is now moving into its next stage.
Gunn later confirmed that the production lasted 93 shooting days, one day longer than the schedule for 2025’s Superman. The figure refers to the actual days spent filming rather than the full period between the start and end of production.
Superman: Man of Tomorrow brings back several characters introduced in the earlier film. Rachel Brosnahan returns as Lois Lane, while Skyler Gisondo is back as Jimmy Olsen. Isabela Merced returns as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner and Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific. Milly Alcock also appears as Kara, or Supergirl, connecting the film to another part of DC Studios’ growing universe.
Aaron Pierre is also set to appear as John Stewart, further expanding the film’s connections to other DC projects. The ensemble builds on characters and relationships already introduced across the new DC Studios slate while keeping Superman at its centre.
The biggest new addition is Lars Eidinger, who plays Brainiac. The film’s confirmed setup places Brainiac as a threat large enough to force Superman and Lex Luthor into an uneasy alliance. That changes the dynamic established in Superman, where Corenswet’s hero and Hoult’s villain stood firmly on opposite sides.
The Superman-Lex Luthor relationship has long been one of the most important rivalries in DC stories. Man of Tomorrow will take that conflict in a different direction by putting both characters against a greater danger. Gunn has not revealed every detail of how that partnership will work, and the production wrap does not provide new plot information. Still, the confirmed premise gives the sequel a clear starting point beyond a straightforward rematch between Superman and Lex Luthor.
Gunn and fellow DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran have been developing a connected slate of films and series, with Superman serving as a major foundation. Man of Tomorrow is one of the next major big-screen chapters in that plan and continues stories audiences have already begun following.
With principal photography now complete, attention will turn to editing, visual effects, sound and the other work required before the film reaches cinemas.
