Suriya‘s latest theatrical release, Scene, has registered the biggest opening of his career in 2026, collecting ₹19.15 crore net in India and ₹34.25 crore worldwide on its first day. Released on November 6 during the Diwali season, the action comedy marks the Tamil directorial debut of Malayalam filmmaker Jithu Madhavan. The film has opened ahead of Suriya’s previous releases this year, Karuppu and Vishwanath & Sons, and has generated considerable interest for its second day as well. According to early box-office tracking, it had collected ₹2.86 crore net in India by 10:03 am on Saturday, November 7, taking its two-day domestic net to ₹22.01 crore at that point.
The opening-day figures indicate a strong response across both language versions. The Tamil version contributed ₹16.15 crore net from 4,878 shows, while the Telugu version collected ₹3 crore net from 1,289 shows. Together, the two versions generated ₹19.15 crore in India net collections, taking the domestic gross to ₹22.25 crore. Overseas markets added another ₹12 crore, resulting in a worldwide opening of ₹34.25 crore. The film also recorded an estimated 14.31 lakh tickets sold across its theatrical run on Friday, indicating substantial audience turnout on its opening day.
Saturday’s advance bookings offered another indication of the interest surrounding the release. According to Sacnilk, Scene had generated ₹10.74 crore gross through advance sales for November 7, with approximately 6.18 lakh tickets booked across 5,931 shows. The reported Day 2 collection of ₹2.86 crore net, however, was a live estimate covering 1,455 shows at 10:03 am. It should not be treated as the final collection for Saturday, as earnings from additional screenings were yet to be reported. The advance-booking figure and the live collection estimate represent different stages of box-office reporting and should not be directly compared.
The opening has also placed Suriya ahead of his two previous theatrical releases this year. Karuppu opened with ₹15.50 crore net in India and ₹28.93 crore worldwide, while Vishwanath & Sons recorded ₹15.35 crore net domestically and ₹31.74 crore worldwide on its first day. Scene has surpassed both films in terms of domestic and worldwide opening figures. The progression across these three releases marks a notable commercial year for Suriya, with each title recording a substantial theatrical opening.
The next major target for Scene is the ₹200-crore worldwide milestone. Karuppu went on to collect more than ₹310 crore worldwide, while Vishwanath & Sons crossed ₹200 crore. If Scene also reaches the same benchmark, Suriya would have three separate films crossing ₹200 crore in worldwide gross within a single calendar year. Such an achievement would mark a significant milestone in his box-office career. However, its strong opening alone does not guarantee that result. The film’s performance over the coming weekdays will be important in determining whether it can sustain its initial momentum and move towards the target.
Kerala has emerged as another important market for the film. Scene collected approximately ₹5.75 crore gross in the state on its opening day, surpassing the first-day performances of Suriya’s two earlier releases there. The response is particularly notable given the competition from two major theatrical releases during the festive period: the pan-India epic Ramayana and Nayanthara’s Mookuthi Amman 2. Despite the crowded release window, Scene managed to attract a sizeable audience in the region, adding to its strong opening across markets.
Beyond its box-office performance, Scene brings together Suriya’s star appeal and Jithu Madhavan’s distinctive filmmaking style. The director previously gained attention through Malayalam films Romancham and Aavesham, both recognised for their dark comedy, unusual characters and unpredictable situations. His Tamil debut brings that sensibility into a crime-comedy setting, with Suriya playing a police officer who is forced to reopen an unfinished case and work alongside an unconventional team. The film also features Nazriya Nazim and Naslen in prominent roles, bringing together performers from the Tamil and Malayalam film industries.
