Warner Bros. has delayed Matt Reeves’ highly anticipated sequel The Batman Part II once again, with the film now set to open in theaters on February 18, 2028. The new release date pushes the film nearly six years beyond the release of The Batman in March 2022, extending the wait for the next chapter in Reeves’ grounded take on the Dark Knight. Alongside the announcement, Reeves offered fans a first glimpse of the sequel by releasing the film’s inaugural camera test footage featuring Robert Pattinson back in the Batman suit.
The brief teaser, shared by Reeves on Vimeo, serves as the first official footage from the long-delayed sequel. While it doesn’t reveal any story details, it confirms that production is now underway and marks Pattinson’s return as Bruce Wayne/Batman after his acclaimed performance in the 2022 film.
Pattinson will be joined by an expanded ensemble cast that includes newly announced additions Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Charles Dance, Brian Tyree Henry, and Sebastian Koch. Warner Bros. has yet to reveal which characters the actors will portray, leaving much of the sequel’s story under wraps. Previously confirmed returning cast members include Andy Serkis, Jeffrey Wright, and Colin Farrell, with Farrell expected to reprise his role as Oswald Cobblepot, following the success of HBO’s The Penguin series.
Although plot details remain closely guarded, Reeves has previously indicated that the sequel will continue exploring Gotham City’s criminal underworld while further developing Bruce Wayne’s evolution as both Gotham’s protector and the world’s greatest detective. The first film established a darker, noir-inspired version of Batman, earning praise for its detective-driven storytelling and grounded approach to the iconic DC character.
The delay marks another shift in the film’s release schedule after Warner Bros. repeatedly adjusted the project’s timeline during its lengthy development. Moving the film to February 2028 also provides Reeves and his team with additional time for production and post-production on what is expected to be one of the studio’s biggest releases of the year.
The original The Batman was both a critical and commercial success, grossing approximately $772 million worldwide while introducing audiences to Pattinson’s younger, more inexperienced version of Bruce Wayne. Its success also launched Reeves’ expanding “Batman Epic Crime Saga,” beginning with HBO’s acclaimed spin-off series The Penguin.
While the latest delay will undoubtedly disappoint fans hoping for a sooner return to Gotham, the release of the first camera test footage offers reassurance that the project is finally moving forward. With filming now underway and Pattinson back beneath the cape and cowl, The Batman Part II has officially entered its next phase as Warner Bros. prepares for one of its biggest superhero releases in 2028.
