The Inbetweeners is set for a return, with a new reunion film currently in development at Netflix. According to Variety, the project’s original four stars — Simon Bird, Joe Thomas, Blake Harrison, and James Buckley — are all attached to reprise their roles, although final deals have not yet been completed. If the negotiations are finalised, the film would reunite the original cast and creators for the franchise’s first scripted feature in more than a decade.
The project follows a move made less than a year ago, when rights holder Banijay U.K. reached an agreement with creators Iain Morris and Damon Beesley, along with their company Fudge Park Productions, to develop a new chapter in the franchise. Reports suggest the screenplay has already been written, with discussions now focused on production timelines and completing the remaining cast agreements.
Originally airing on E4 between 2008 and 2010, The Inbetweeners followed socially awkward sixth-form students Will, Simon, Jay, and Neil as they navigated school, friendship and a series of painfully embarrassing attempts at romance. Positioned as a more grounded and awkward comedy than the darker teen drama Skins, the sitcom quickly became one of E4’s biggest successes.
Across its three series, the show set ratings records for the channel, won a British Comedy Award, and received the BAFTA Audience Award in 2010. Its popularity carried over to the big screen with The Inbetweeners Movie (2011) and The Inbetweeners 2 (2014), which together grossed more than £100 million worldwide. The first film set a then-record for the biggest opening weekend ever for a British comedy, a milestone later surpassed by its own sequel.
This will not be the cast’s first reunion. In 2019, all four actors returned for a two-hour tenth-anniversary special that aired on Channel 4. The programme received a mixed critical response, with several reviewers describing it as “shambolic,” while James Buckley later acknowledged that revisiting the series in that format had been a mistake. That experience is widely seen as one reason the new project is being developed as a feature film rather than another television reunion special.
Alongside the four leads, producers are reportedly hoping to bring back Emily Atack, who played Charlotte Hinchcliffe, and Greg Davies, who portrayed teacher Mr. Gilbert before later finding international success as the host of Taskmaster. Neither actor has been officially confirmed to return.
Buckley, who has remained closely associated with the series through personalised Cameo videos performed in character as Jay, has previously said that any revival should remain faithful to the show’s original style. “Just make sure we keep all that silly, disgusting humour,” he said earlier this year, adding that fans would not want the series “watered down” for modern audiences. His comments align with reports suggesting he has already approved the screenplay. Buckley’s continued popularity as Jay has also underscored the character’s enduring appeal long after the original series concluded.
Joe Thomas had also spoken publicly about the possibility of a reunion before the latest reports emerged, revealing that the cast had discussed another adventure for the group, with Las Vegas suggested as a potential destination following the holidays to Spain and Australia featured in the previous two films. Thomas also acknowledged that any new project would need to live up to the chemistry that made the original cast so popular with audiences.
Netflix has not officially commented on the project, and no release date has been announced. However, with the original cast, creators and writers all involved in the development process, the film represents the strongest indication yet that The Inbetweeners is set to return as a genuine continuation of the beloved comedy rather than a reboot with a new generation of characters.
