Timothée Chalamet and Selena Gomez to Lead Illumination’s New Animated Film Not Alone

Timothée Chalamet and Selena Gomez to Lead Illumination's New Animated Film Not Alone

Universal Pictures and Illumination have officially unveiled Not Alone, a new original animated feature starring Timothée Chalamet and Selena Gomez. The project was announced during the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, the world’s leading animation event, with Universal confirming a theatrical release date of April 16, 2027.
The film marks a significant milestone for Chalamet, as Not Alone will be his first leading role in a feature-length animated movie. The project also reunites Chalamet and Gomez years after they appeared together in Woody Allen’s A Rainy Day in New York.
The announcement represents Illumination’s latest original feature after building one of Hollywood’s most successful animation brands through franchises such as Despicable Me, Minions, Sing, The Secret Life of Pets, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
In Not Alone, Chalamet will voice Joe, an introverted rocket mechanic who prefers a quiet life and generally keeps to himself. Gomez will voice Fran, a brilliant astro-botanist who is developing the world’s first plant-powered rocket.
According to the official synopsis, Joe and Fran are brought together to prepare for the inaugural launch of the revolutionary spacecraft. While sparks immediately fly between them, neither is particularly skilled when it comes to romance. Their lives become even more complicated when three tiny alien fugitives unexpectedly take refuge in Joe’s home.
The alien trio—Dunk, Welly, and Shirm—are attempting to evade an overzealous but incompetent interplanetary law officer named Zandro. Believing Fran’s experimental rocket may be their only way home, the aliens become entangled in the pair’s mission and set the stage for an adventure that blends science fiction, comedy, and romance.
The supporting cast includes several notable names. British comedians Rob Brydon, Diane Morgan, and Jamie Demetriou will voice the three alien characters, while Emmy-winning actor Brett Goldstein will play Officer Zandro. The ensemble also features Lamorne Morris and Academy Award-winning actress Allison Janney in undisclosed roles.
The film is being produced by Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri, one of the most influential figures in modern animation. Joy Poirel, Richard Curtis, and David Distenfeld are serving as executive producers.
Directing duties will be shared by Eric Guillon, Claire Dodgson, and Jonathan Del Val. Guillon is one of Illumination’s longest-serving creative talents, having contributed character designs to the Despicable Me and Minions franchises as well as Sing and The Secret Life of Pets. Dodgson previously worked as an editor on several Illumination productions, while Del Val co-directed Minions: The Rise of Gru and The Secret Life of Pets 2.
One of the more notable aspects of Not Alone is that it is being developed as an original story rather than an adaptation or franchise installment. At a time when much of the animation industry is driven by sequels, reboots, and established intellectual property, the project represents a relatively rare investment in a completely new world and set of characters.
The announcement was teased by Chalamet a day earlier when he shared a photo of a cloudy sky on Instagram accompanied by the caption, “new movie announcement tmrw :)” along with a rocket emoji. Following the official reveal, both Universal and Illumination released the first poster for the film across their social media platforms, while Gomez also shared the announcement with her followers.
While plot details remain limited, Not Alone has already emerged as one of Illumination’s most intriguing upcoming projects. With two major stars leading the voice cast, a team of experienced animation filmmakers behind the camera, and an original science-fiction story at its core, the film will be one of the studio’s most closely watched releases as it heads toward its April 2027 debut.
