Tom Cruise will become the 52nd recipient of the American Film Institute’s (AFI) Life Achievement Award, the organisation announced on October 21. The 64-year-old actor will be honoured at a gala tribute at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on Saturday, April 24, 2027.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the evening will feature clips from Cruise’s films, tributes from friends and collaborators, and an acceptance speech by the actor. The honouree is selected by the AFI Board of Trustees. Variety explains that the award recognises individuals who have advanced the cinematic arts, demonstrated career longevity and earned recognition from scholars, critics, peers and audiences. IndieWire describes it as AFI’s highest honour for a career in film, while The Hollywood Reporter calls it one of the industry’s highest distinctions.
Kathleen Kennedy, chair of the AFI Board of Trustees, praised Cruise’s contribution to cinema in a statement announcing the honour.
“Tom Cruise is a global icon. As an actor and producer, he brings an extraordinary commitment to everything he does. What I especially admire is his deep belief in movies and their ability to bring people together,” Kennedy said. She added that his passion has made him “an extraordinary ambassador for American film around the world” and said AFI was honoured to present him with the award.
Cruise’s career spans 45 years, with his films earning nearly $13 billion at the worldwide box office. He rose to prominence during the 1980s through leading roles in Risky Business, Top Gun and The Color of Money. His subsequent credits include Rain Man, A Few Good Men, The Firm, Minority Report, Magnolia and Born on the Fourth of July. Other notable films in his career include Collateral, Edge of Tomorrow and Interview with the Vampire.
Cruise has also become closely associated with the Mission: Impossible franchise, in which he plays secret agent Ethan Hunt. According to IndieWire, he has starred in eight instalments across three decades, with the series becoming a showcase for his increasingly ambitious stunt work.
His achievements have also earned recognition from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Cruise is a three-time Oscar nominee for acting, having received Best Actor nominations for Born on the Fourth of July (1989) and Jerry Maguire (1996), as well as a Best Supporting Actor nomination for Magnolia (1999). He was also nominated as a producer when Top Gun: Maverick (2022) received a Best Picture nomination. IndieWire reports that he received an honorary Oscar at the Academy’s Governors Awards in 2025.
Beyond his Academy recognition, Cruise has received several other career honours. The Hollywood Reporter lists distinctions from the Cannes Film Festival and the Producers Guild of America, along with France’s Knight of the Legion of Honour, the Simon Wiesenthal Center’s Humanitarian Award and the Will Rogers Motion Picture Pioneers Foundation’s Pioneer Award.
Cruise’s recent work has also kept him in the awards conversation. He most recently starred in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Digger, which IndieWire says has brought renewed attention to his awards prospects this year. He is also expected to return to the screen in Days of Thunder 2. Variety reports that Anne Hathaway will star alongside him in the next chapter of the franchise, which is scheduled for release in 2028.
Cruise follows Eddie Murphy, the previous recipient of the AFI Life Achievement Award. According to IndieWire, a recording of Murphy’s tribute later premiered on Netflix. Bill Burr, Dave Chappelle, Arsenio Hall, Spike Lee, Mike Myers, Chris Rock and Stevie Wonder were among the presenters and performers at the event.
Other recent recipients of the AFI honour include Francis Ford Coppola, Steve Martin, John Williams, Diane Keaton, George Clooney, Denzel Washington, Julie Andrews and Nicole Kidman, according to Variety. The award was established in 1973, with John Ford as its inaugural recipient. Other past honourees include Orson Welles, Alfred Hitchcock, Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese and Meryl Streep.
The American Film Institute is a nonprofit organisation dedicated to championing the moving image as an art form. The Hollywood Reporter notes that proceeds from the tribute gala will support AFI’s education and arts initiatives.
