One of Hindi cinema’s most celebrated modern horror franchises has found its newest lead. Alia Bhatt has officially joined the cast of Tumbbad 2, starring alongside Sohum Shah in the sequel to the acclaimed 2018 cult classic. The sequel will also feature Nawazuddin Siddiqui in a key role. The announcement was made on July 14, when Sohum Shah welcomed Bhatt to the project with an Instagram post that read, “A new chapter unfolds. Welcome to Tumbbad 2, Alia Bhatt.” The casting announcement was met with widespread excitement online and marks Bhatt’s first full-fledged venture into the horror genre.
The news had been building for several weeks through motion posters, subtle social media hints, and growing fan speculation. Sohum Shah’s Instagram post on Monday finally made it official. Sources close to the project have confirmed that Alia is not making a brief guest appearance but has a key role in the film and will be a central part of the story alongside Sohum Shah.
In a statement shared around the announcement, Alia spoke about why she chose to be part of the project. She said the world of Tumbbad is unlike anything she has been part of before and that the story felt deeply layered and emotionally charged—not just a scary film, but something with real depth and meaning at its core. She added that stepping into this universe for the first time felt both exciting and a little daunting, which is exactly why she said yes.
Sohum Shah, who has been at the centre of the sequel from the very beginning as both actor and producer, also shared his vision for where the story is headed. He said Tumbbad has always been deeply personal to him and that, with the sequel, the goal is to take the world forward in a way that feels deeper and more expansive. He spoke about building on the mythology and atmosphere that audiences connected with so strongly in the original while exploring new layers within the story. He described it as something that will feel familiar in its essence but also genuinely new in the way it unfolds.
The filmmakers have maintained that Tumbbad 2 is being developed to expand the mythology established in the original film rather than simply revisit it. According to the team, the story always contained layers that were left unexplored, with the sequel aiming to build on the world and themes introduced in the first film.
Tumbbad 2 is directed by Adesh Prasad and produced by Sohum Shah under his banner, Sohum Shah Films, in association with Pen Studios. The film will be distributed by Pen Marudhar. Jayantilal Gada of Pen Studios said the sequel is being mounted on a larger scale while staying completely true to the storytelling that made audiences fall in love with the original. Director Adesh Prasad said the team has focused on expanding the world of Tumbbad without losing the soul of the first film, building something rooted in the original while offering audiences a fresh and immersive experience.
Tumbbad 2 is scheduled to release on December 3, 2027, a date announced alongside the film’s first motion poster, which carried the tagline: “A sinful past, an ominous future. The hunger rises, the legacy of greed continues.”
For anyone who has not seen the first film, Tumbbad was released in 2018 and directed by Rahi Anil Barve. Produced by Sohum Shah, who also starred in the film, it told a dark mythological horror story spanning multiple generations of a cursed family consumed by greed. The film won the National Award for Best Special Effects and gradually built a devoted cult following, earning a reputation as one of the most visually and thematically distinctive horror films in Hindi cinema.
Its theatrical re-release in 2024 proved equally significant, performing remarkably well at the box office and becoming one of the most successful re-releases for a modern Hindi film. The renewed theatrical run introduced Tumbbad to a new generation of audiences while reaffirming its enduring popularity and strengthening anticipation for the sequel.
With Alia Bhatt now officially joining Sohum Shah, Tumbbad 2 has added one of Hindi cinema’s biggest stars to a franchise that has steadily grown in stature over the years. The sequel is now set to become Bhatt’s first full-fledged horror film while continuing the dark mythological world that made the original Tumbbad a modern cult classic.
