Twilight of the Dead Wraps Filming With Kate Beckinsale Leading George A. Romero’s Final Zombie Saga

Kate Beckinsale in Twilight of the Dead

Filming has officially wrapped on Twilight of the Dead, the long-awaited final chapter of filmmaker George A. Romero’s iconic zombie saga.

The upcoming horror film stars Kate Beckinsale, Betty Gabriel, Abigail London and John D. Hickman, and is directed by the Paz Brothers, Doron and Yoav. The project is based on a story treatment developed by Romero before his death in 2017 and is being presented as the conclusion to the filmmaker’s influential series of zombie films.

The film is set on a devastated Earth, where the remaining survivors are caught between rival human factions and an evolving threat from the undead. As humanity struggles to survive in a world reshaped by the zombie outbreak, the story explores the challenges faced by those who remain and the conflicts that emerge as they attempt to find a way forward. While further plot details and character descriptions are being kept under wraps, the film is expected to continue Romero’s exploration of survival and human behaviour in the aftermath of a global catastrophe.

Kate Beckinsale leads the cast, joined by Betty Gabriel, Abigail London and John D. Hickman. Beckinsale is known for starring in the Underworld franchise, while Gabriel has appeared in films such as Get Out and Upgrade. Their roles in Twilight of the Dead have not yet been fully detailed.

Doron and Yoav Paz, known for directing genre films including The Golem and Plan A, are directing the film. Greg Nicotero, the make-up effects artist and director known for his work on The Walking Dead, is handling the film’s special effects. Nicotero also worked with Romero on Day of the Dead, connecting the upcoming project with the filmmaker’s earlier work.

The screenplay was written by Paolo Zelati, Joe Knetter and Robert L. Lucas, based on the original story treatment developed by Zelati and Romero. Zelati continued working on the script after Romero’s death, with Suzanne Romero overseeing the project to help preserve the filmmaker’s original vision.

Romero’s Dead franchise began with Night of the Living Dead in 1968, which helped establish many of the conventions associated with modern zombie cinema. The series continued with films including Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead and Land of the Dead. Across these films, Romero used zombie outbreaks to explore social tensions, human behaviour and the struggle to survive.

Twilight of the Dead was first revealed in 2021 and was envisioned by Romero as the final instalment in his saga. The project therefore represents an extension of a story world that Romero developed across decades, while bringing a new creative team and cast to his final planned chapter.

Romero’s widow, Suzanne Romero, is involved in the film as a producer, alongside John Baldecchi and Sarah Donnelly. The project is being led by Roundtable Entertainment, with Paolo Zelati, who co-developed the original story treatment with Romero, also serving as a producer.

Magenta Light Studios has secured the film’s North American rights and is set to release it theatrically across the United States and Canada. The Syndicate is handling international sales, bringing the project to potential distributors in overseas markets. A theatrical release date has not yet been announced.

With filming now complete, Twilight of the Dead will move into post-production as it prepares for release. The film brings a new cast and creative team to Romero’s original vision for the final chapter of his zombie saga. The producers have also left open the possibility of further films in a new franchise, depending on how the project performs.

The completion of filming marks the next stage for a project that has remained connected to Romero’s legacy from its development. With the original story treatment serving as the foundation and Suzanne Romero involved in overseeing the project, Twilight of the Dead now moves toward its eventual theatrical release while retaining its connection to the filmmaker’s planned conclusion to the Dead series.
