Vidya Balan Reunites With R. Balki for His First Tamil Film

Vidya Balan on the sets of R. Balki’s first Tamil film

Vidya Balan is stepping into a new chapter of Tamil cinema with R. Balki’s first Tamil directorial venture, bringing the actor and filmmaker together for a full-length feature nearly 17 years after Paa (2009). The untitled project has begun shooting, with Vidya Balan confirming the news through an Instagram Stories post from the sets. Maestro Ilaiyaraaja is composing the music, adding another meaningful link to R. Balki’s long-standing creative association with the legendary composer.

The reunion carries a history. R. Balki and Vidya Balan first worked together on Paa, the 2009 drama that earned Vidya Balan the Filmfare Award for Best Actress. The film also featured Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan and became an important point in the actor’s career. Their next connection came through Shamitabh in 2015, where Vidya Balan made a brief cameo. This new project therefore marks their return to a substantial collaboration after more than a decade.

What makes the project especially intriguing is the meeting of two new beginnings. For R. Balki, it is his directorial entry into Tamil cinema. For Vidya Balan, who has Tamil roots, it is her first starring role in a Tamil-language feature. She has previously appeared in Tamil cinema, including a cameo in Ajith Kumar’s Nerkonda Paarvai, while her presence in Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 has added another connection to the industry. The new film gives her a much larger space within a Tamil narrative.

There is another fascinating layer in the collaboration: Ilaiyaraaja. The composer has been closely associated with R. Balki’s cinema, scoring Cheeni Kum, Paa and Shamitabh, among other projects. Ilaiyaraaja himself has described R. Balki as a major admirer of his music, while R. Balki has publicly expressed deep respect for the composer. Their partnership has therefore become one of the filmmaker’s most recognisable musical signatures. Now, that creative relationship moves into a Tamil-language film, giving the collaboration a particularly natural cultural setting.

The first glimpse from the sets also offers a small but striking clue about the film’s visual world. Vidya Balan shared a behind-the-scenes photograph holding the script, wearing spectacles and sporting a long braid. Her traditional styling gives the image a distinctly rooted feel, although the makers have not revealed her character or the story. Rather than explaining the film, the photograph works as a quiet introduction to a new screen persona.

The phrase “New Beginnings,” used by Vidya Balan in her post, neatly captures the moment. It points to a fresh language, a new filmmaking territory for R. Balki and a different performance space for Vidya Balan, while reconnecting them with a creative relationship that began with Paa.

With the title, plot, wider cast and release plans still under wraps, the film remains deliberately mysterious. What is already clear, however, is the unusual combination at its centre: Vidya Balan taking the lead in her first Tamil feature, R. Balki entering Tamil cinema as a director, and Ilaiyaraaja providing the musical voice. That blend of reunion and reinvention makes this one of the more distinctive new Tamil projects to watch as it takes shape.

That restraint suits the announcement. Instead of revealing a plot summary, the image introduces the atmosphere and lets the collaboration create curiosity. It also leaves room for the film to reveal whether R. Balki is exploring another human story or using the Tamil setting for a broader idea. At this stage, the makers have confirmed the collaboration and shooting, while details remain guarded.

The project also represents a continuation of the creative connection between R. Balki and Ilaiyaraaja. Their previous collaborations have included Cheeni Kum, Paa and Shamitabh, making the composer’s involvement in Balki’s first Tamil directorial project another link between the filmmaker’s earlier work and this new phase.

The project represents an expansion for Vidya of her screen journey into a leading role in a Tamil-language feature. For R. Balki, it marks a new directorial territory while bringing him into a language and film culture with which he already has a meaningful creative connection through Ilaiyaraaja. The collaboration therefore brings together several established relationships while creating a new chapter for each of the principal artists.
