‘Shatter Me’ Movie in the Works as Warner Bros. Secures Rights To Tahereh Mafi’s Bestselling Series

Warner Bros. is developing a film adaptation of Tahereh Mafi's bestselling Shatter Me series, the BookTok phenomenon that has sold over 15 million copies worldwide.

One of BookTok’s most beloved young-adult franchises is finally making its way to the big screen. Warner Bros. has acquired the rights to adapt Tahereh Mafi’s bestselling dystopian YA series Shatter Me into a feature film, according to Variety. The announcement marks a major milestone for a franchise that has built a massive global following over the past 15 years.

Over the years, Shatter Me has become one of the most successful young-adult book series in recent memory, particularly among readers on TikTok and Instagram’s BookTok community. The franchise has sold more than 15 million copies worldwide and has been translated into 34 languages across 38 territories, helping it become a global phenomenon.

The announcement also arrives as the original Shatter Me novel approaches its 15th anniversary. First published in 2011, the book found a new generation of readers through social media, where discussions surrounding its characters, romance, and dystopian world have kept the series relevant years after its debut.

The Warner Bros. deal also represents the latest chapter in a long journey to bring Shatter Me to the screen. Adaptation efforts have surfaced at various points over the past decade, but none ultimately moved into production. For many readers, the Warner Bros. acquisition is the strongest sign yet that Juliette Ferrars and Aaron Warner could finally make the leap from page to screen.

The series follows Juliette Ferrars, a teenage girl whose touch is lethal. After years of isolation and captivity, she escapes and finds herself at the center of a growing rebellion against an oppressive regime known as The Reestablishment. As she discovers the true extent of her powers, Juliette becomes a key figure in the fight against the government while navigating complicated relationships and personal struggles.

One of the series’ most popular characters is Aaron Warner, the commander of Sector 45 within The Reestablishment. Initially introduced as an antagonist, Warner gradually emerges as one of the franchise’s most complex characters, eventually becoming Juliette’s ally and romantic partner.

“I’ve been tremendously lucky to have a devoted fanbase over the last fifteen years, and I’m excited for the chance to bring the Shatter Me world and characters to life in a way that will honor the fans and their love for these books,” Mafi said about the film adaptation. “Warner Bros. has been a great partner so far, and I’m looking forward to creating a memorable cinematic experience that elevates the series to new heights.”

Temple Hill’s Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen, Sunswept Entertainment’s Karen Rosenfelt, and Langley Park Pictures’ Kevin McCormick will produce the project. The film marks the first announced project under McCormick’s new producing deal with Warner Bros., while Mafi will serve as an executive producer.

The involvement of Temple Hill is particularly notable given the company’s history with successful young-adult adaptations. The production banner previously helped bring franchises such as Twilight, The Maze Runner, and The Fault in Our Stars to the screen, making it a natural fit for one of BookTok’s most popular literary properties.

The film adaptation comes as the Shatter Me universe continues to expand. Last year, Mafi released Watch Me, the first novel in The New Republic series, which is set ten years after the fall of The Reestablishment. The novel debuted at No. 1 on The New York Times bestseller list and remained there for seven weeks.

Its sequel, Release Me, was published earlier this year and also became an instant bestseller. The third installment, Escape Me, is currently scheduled for release in September 2026. The announcement has already generated excitement among readers across social media, many of whom have spent years discussing dream casting choices for characters such as Juliette, Warner, Kenji, and Adam. However, Warner Bros. has yet to reveal any casting decisions, story details, or a release timeline for the adaptation.
