The story that began with a deserted London and a world transformed by rage is heading into another chapter. Danny Boyle has confirmed that 28 Years Later Part 3 is moving forward, with Cillian Murphy set to play a much more prominent role than his brief appearance in the latest sequel.
Boyle shared the update at the Zurich Film Festival while promoting his new film Ink, giving audiences the clearest indication yet that the post-apocalyptic saga is continuing. The confirmation also provides a significant update on Murphy’s involvement, after his brief appearance in the second film left questions about whether his character would have a larger role in the planned continuation.
The third film already has an important piece of its creative foundation in place. Alex Garland has written the script, bringing back the writer who created the original 28 Days Later and later collaborated with Boyle on the 2025 revival. Garland, who has also directed acclaimed films including Civil War, has once again shaped the next stage of the story, while Boyle is expected to return behind the camera.
For Cillian Murphy, however, the development represents a significant change. The Oscar-winning actor appeared only briefly at the end of January 2026’s 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, reprising his role as Jim from the original 2002 film. That fleeting appearance immediately raised questions about whether Jim would become important to the wider story. Danny Boyle has now made it clear that Murphy’s involvement in Part 3 will be considerably larger, putting one of the franchise’s most recognisable characters back in the heart of the narrative.
Boyle also approached Murphy’s return with his trademark sense of humour. While discussing the actor at the festival, the filmmaker looked back at their work on the original 28 Days Later and joked that Murphy looked like “Iggy Pop” when they took his kit off for the 2002 movie. Boyle then joked about Murphy’s status as an Oscar winner, suggesting that he is no longer sure whether the actor will be quite as willing to strip down for the camera.
The confirmation arrives after a difficult commercial chapter for the revived franchise. The Bone Temple recorded a sharp worldwide box-office decline, taking approximately $58.5 million, compared with around $151 million for 28 Years Later in 2025. The difference created uncertainty around the future of the planned continuation, making Boyle’s latest comments particularly significant for audiences who had been waiting to see whether the story would continue.
Despite the renewed momentum, the third film is not yet on a fixed production schedule, and Boyle has indicated that filming plans are being affected by location restrictions in the UK. Some of the locations required for the film are only available during particular periods of the year, meaning production will have to work around seasonal conditions rather than simply moving into camera-ready mode.
That delay, however, does not appear to signal a change in direction. With Alex Garland’s script completed, Danny Boyle attached to the project and Cillian Murphy preparing for a substantially expanded return, the creative pieces are beginning to fall into place.
The development also brings the franchise back toward one of the central characters from its beginning. Jim was introduced in 28 Days Later as a survivor waking up in an abandoned London, and Murphy’s performance became closely associated with the original film. His brief appearance in The Bone Temple reintroduced the character to the revived series, while the latest update suggests that Part 3 will give him considerably more to do.
For a story that has continued to expand its post-apocalyptic world across successive chapters, Murphy’s return provides a direct connection to the original film. Garland’s involvement also links the next chapter to the screenwriter who established the franchise’s original story, while Boyle’s expected return behind the camera maintains another key creative connection.
For a franchise built around the unsettling question of what remains after society collapses, 28 Years Later Part 3 now has an intriguing connection to where everything began. Jim is returning, Garland has written the next chapter, and Boyle is once again helping shape the journey. The cameras may have to wait for the right moment, but the story itself is clearly moving forward.
