Andrew Garfield to receive the Maltin Modern Master Award at SBIFF 2027
October 21, 2026

Andrew Garfield will receive the Maltin Modern Master Award, the Santa Barbara International Film Festival’s highest honour, during the festival’s 42nd edition. The festival announced the news on October 20, recognising the two-time Oscar nominee for a career spanning mainstream Hollywood productions and challenging, director-driven films. The honour also follows acclaim for his portrayal of OpenAI chief Sam Altman in Luca Guadagnino’s Artificial.

The tribute will take place on Saturday, February 6, 2027, at the historic Arlington Theatre in Santa Barbara. The evening will feature film clips and a conversation moderated by the award’s namesake, film critic and historian Leonard Maltin. The 42nd Santa Barbara International Film Festival is scheduled to run from February 3 to 13, 2027.

Maltin praised Garfield’s ability to move between commercial productions and more demanding independent projects. In a statement announcing the honour, he said, “Andrew Garfield has long since proven himself to critics and audiences alike.” He added that balancing a career between mainstream Hollywood films and challenging, director-driven projects was no simple task, noting that Garfield had managed to do so successfully.

Garfield, 43, has built an extensive filmography spanning a range of genres and filmmaking styles. His credits include The Social Network, Never Let Me Go, Silence, The Amazing Spider-Man, 99 Homes, Hacksaw Ridge and Tick, Tick… Boom!. More recently, he starred opposite Florence Pugh in John Crowley’s We Live in Time and appeared alongside Julia Roberts and Ayo Edebiri in Guadagnino’s After the Hunt.

Beyond film, Garfield has also earned recognition on stage. He won a Tony Award for his performance in the Broadway revival of Angels in America. His upcoming projects include the Apple series Wild Things, in which he stars opposite Jude Law in a story centred on Las Vegas performers Siegfried and Roy.

The award announcement comes amid strong critical attention for Artificial, which premiered at the New York Film Festival. Neon is scheduled to release the film theatrically on Christmas Day, December 25, 2026. Garfield portrays Altman in the film, which explores the story of OpenAI and the two-decade race to advance artificial intelligence.

The film’s journey to release involved a change in studio backing. Amazon MGM Studios initially supported the project before dropping it, after which Neon secured a deal in June to complete and distribute the film. Garfield’s performance has since become a prominent part of the film’s public profile, adding to the recognition surrounding his recent work.

Established in 1995, the Modern Master Award honours an individual whose accomplishments have enriched the culture through contributions to the motion picture industry. The award was renamed the Maltin Modern Master Award in 2015 in recognition of Leonard Maltin, the festival’s longtime moderator.

Previous recipients include Adam Sandler, Nicole Kidman, Denzel Washington, George Clooney, Clint Eastwood, Angelina Jolie, Jamie Lee Curtis, Javier Bardem, Robert Downey Jr., Cate Blanchett, Christopher Plummer, Christopher Nolan, James Cameron, Sean Penn and Peter Jackson.

Garfield joins several previously announced honourees for the 2027 festival. John Malkovich will receive the Outstanding Performer of the Year Award on Friday, February 12, for Wild Horse Nine, the Martin McDonagh film for which he won Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival. Emily Blunt will receive the Kirk Douglas Award for Excellence in Film.

The selection of Garfield for the Maltin Modern Master Award recognises the breadth of his work across studio productions, independent cinema and theatre. His performance in Artificial adds another significant role to a career that has consistently moved between large-scale productions and character-driven projects.
