US Domestic Box Office Report: A Weekend of Ups and Downs
Marvel’s latest superhero outing, Captain America: Brave New World, is facing a tough road at the box office. Despite an impressive $100 million opening over the extended Presidents Day holiday, the film has seen a steep 82.4% drop in its second weekend, earning $7.2 million from 4,105 theaters. With a domestic total of $120.2 million, the Anthony Mackie-led film is falling short of the sustained success seen in previous Marvel hits. Given its $180 million+ budget (before marketing costs), the film needs a strong hold in the coming weeks to avoid underperformance.
The sharp decline places Brave New World in the company of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (-70%) and Thor: Love and Thunder (-67%), both of which struggled to maintain audience interest beyond their opening weekends. Poor reviews and weak word-of-mouth are further dampening its prospects, making its long-term box office survival uncertain.
‘The Monkey’ Opens Solidly at No. 2
While Captain America stumbled, Neon’s horror thriller The Monkey made a strong debut, earning $5.8 million from 3,200 theaters. Based on Stephen King’s 1980s short story, the film, directed by Osgood Perkins, has benefited from a buzzy marketing campaign and its connection to the horror master himself. Produced on a modest $10 million budget, the film is well on its way to profitability, despite its divisive C+ CinemaScore.
Neon’s chief distribution officer, Elissa Federoff, praised the collaboration with Osgood Perkins and highlighted the film’s ability to subvert horror expectations, providing a wild and unpredictable theater experience.
‘Paddington in Peru’ at No. 3
Family audiences continue to support Paddington in Peru, which added $1.56 million in its second weekend—a 69.8% drop from its debut. The film’s $20.3 million domestic total is underwhelming compared to its international success. With a $90 million budget, the threequel has more ground to cover to match the earnings of Paddington ($326M) and Paddington 2 ($290M).
‘Dog Man’ Holds Steady at No. 4
Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s Dog Man continued its solid box office run, securing $1.33 million from 3,179 venues. The animated crime-comedy, which dipped 52.5% from the previous weekend, has now reached $74.2 million domestically and remains a strong performer given its $40 million budget.
‘The Unbreakable Boy’ Debuts at No. 5
Lionsgate’s faith-based drama The Unbreakable Boy had a modest debut, opening with $890,000 from 1,736 theaters. Starring Zachary Levi, the film received mixed critical reception (48% on Rotten Tomatoes) but was warmly embraced by audiences, earning an A CinemaScore. However, it faces an uphill battle in a competitive market.
‘Heart Eyes’ Drops to No. 6
Paramount’s animated romance Heart Eyes took a sharp 83.8% drop, earning $800,000 from 3,003 theaters. With a domestic total of $24.7 million, the film is struggling to maintain momentum despite its strong opening weeks.
‘Ne Zha 2’ Continues Its Run at No. 7
The Chinese-language animated film Ne Zha 2 earned $760,000 from 800 theaters, bringing its domestic total to $11.2 million. While impressive for a foreign film in North America, its real success lies overseas, where it has surpassed $1.7 billion globally, making it the highest-grossing animated film ever and the eighth-highest-grossing movie of all time.
‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ at No. 8
Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King released in Dec 2024 added $572,000 in this weekend, bringing its total to $243.4 million domestically. The film continues to show steady legs despite its lengthy theatrical run.
