Amazon MGM Studios and Scott Stuber’s United Artists have greenlit an untitled thriller directed by Christopher McQuarrie and starring Denzel Washington. The film is scheduled to arrive in theatres on October 1, 2027. The announcement was confirmed by Deadline and TheWrap on October 20.
The film’s official logline offers a compelling premise. A former police detective serving a life sentence is diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. Granted compassionate release with six months to live, he returns home to reconnect with the estranged daughter he left behind and meet a grandson he never knew existed. Hoping to make amends and leave his dark past behind, he soon discovers that his past has not forgotten him.
The story brings together mortality, guilt and family, placing a man’s attempt at redemption against the threat of unresolved events from his past. The screenplay was written by Scott Barkan and Gregg Zehentner, the writing duo behind Into the Dark and Edge of Fear.
Christopher McQuarrie is among Hollywood’s most established action filmmakers. Over the past decade, he has become Tom Cruise’s principal creative collaborator on the Mission: Impossible franchise, directing Rogue Nation, Fallout and Dead Reckoning Part One, while also co-writing Dead Reckoning Part Two.
McQuarrie won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for The Usual Suspects in 1996. His directing credits also include Jack Reacher and The Way of the Gun. His experience building suspense, constructing intricate narratives and directing performances from leading actors makes him a fitting choice for a thriller centred on a morally complex character.
McQuarrie will produce the film alongside his frequent producing partner, Heather McQuarrie.
Denzel Washington’s casting is another major draw. A two-time Academy Award winner whose career spans more than four decades, Washington has delivered acclaimed performances in films including Training Day, Fences, Malcolm X, Philadelphia, The Equalizer trilogy and Gladiator II.
The role of a dying former detective attempting to reconcile with his daughter and meet his grandson for the first time offers Washington an emotionally demanding character. The protagonist must confront the consequences of his past while trying to make peace with the family he left behind, creating an opportunity for Washington to bring his characteristic intensity to a story driven by guilt, redemption and suspense.
Washington has also maintained an active schedule across film and theatre. He recently returned to Broadway in Othello, appearing alongside Jake Gyllenhaal, and starred in Spike Lee’s Highest 2 Lowest. He is also set to appear in Netflix’s The Take, directed by a filmmaker whose project features Robert Pattinson and Daisy Edgar-Jones, and is slated for 2027. The McQuarrie thriller adds another major project to Washington’s recent run of work.
The film’s producing team includes Christopher and Heather McQuarrie, Scott Stuber and Nick Nesbitt for United Artists, Joseph Restaino for Hungry Bull Productions, Reza Moheet and Norman Aladjem for Mainstay Entertainment, as well as Katia Washington and Tommy Harper. Tony Stopperan, Tim Honigman and Joe Guest are attached as executive producers.
The collaboration between McQuarrie and Washington brings together two established names from different corners of Hollywood. McQuarrie’s experience with high-stakes action and tightly constructed thrillers, combined with Washington’s ability to portray morally complicated characters, gives the project a strong foundation.
The film is scheduled for theatrical release on October 1, 2027. Further details, including its official title and additional casting information, have yet to be announced.
