Dominic West, John Cleese and Portia de Rossi have joined Jeff Daniels in The Reception, an ensemble comedy directed by Trudie Styler. Set at a grand Scottish estate, the film revolves around an extravagant wedding reception that goes ahead despite the absence of both the bride and the groom. The groom, Felix, has left Victoria at the altar, leaving their families and friends to deal with a celebration that has lost its central purpose. Alongside its unusual premise, the film brings together performers from different generations of comedy and marks de Rossi’s return to feature filmmaking after an 11-year gap.

The casting brings together several familiar names from British and American screen comedy, alongside performers with established careers in television and drama. John Cleese, who co-created Monty Python and starred in A Fish Called Wanda, joins Jeff Daniels, widely recognised for his performance in Dumb and Dumber. Portia de Rossi is best known for playing Lindsay Bluth in the television comedy series Arrested Development, while Dominic West has appeared in projects including The Crown and The Wire. Their involvement gives the film an ensemble that draws on different strands of screen comedy and dramatic performance.

The story begins after Felix abandons Victoria at the altar. Rather than calling off the event, the wedding party carries on at the Scottish estate, where guests are expected to participate in a reception originally planned to celebrate the couple. Their families and friends are left to navigate the situation while attempting to maintain appearances. The premise places an elaborate social occasion in direct contrast with the circumstances that have unfolded, creating an awkward situation for those gathered at the estate.

The reception is designed around a couple who are no longer present, leaving the guests to contend with the consequences of the groom’s decision. The situation provides the central source of comedy, with the interactions among the wedding party, relatives and friends driving the events. The contrast between the formality of the occasion and the absence of the people it was organised to celebrate gives the film its defining setup. Instead of following the expected course of a wedding celebration, the gathering must find a way to continue despite the circumstances.

The Scottish location is central to the film’s setting. The grand estate provides the backdrop for the reception and brings both families and their guests together in one place. The announcement has not identified the characters played by the newly added actors, so the individual roles of West, Cleese and de Rossi have not yet been specified. The confirmed details currently centre on the wedding-party premise, the ensemble cast and the creative team behind the comedy.

For de Rossi, The Reception also marks a return to feature filmmaking. Her last feature-film appearance was in Now Add Honey, released in 2015, making this her first feature-film role in 11 years. Although audiences may know her primarily for her television work, particularly as Lindsay Bluth in Arrested Development, the new project brings her back to the feature-film space after an extended absence. Her addition to the cast is therefore notable not only as part of the film’s ensemble but also as a return to a format in which she has not appeared for more than a decade.

The supporting cast includes Bronson Pinchot, known for Beverly Hills Cop; Nicolas Maury, recognised for Call My Agent; and Barbara Marten, whose credits include Dune: Prophecy. Eliot Sumner, who appeared in Sense and Sensibility, is also part of the ensemble. They are joined by Alyth Ross, Lewis Fleming, Will Merrick and Daniel Quincy Annoh. Together, the performers add further members to the wedding-party cast, although details of their respective characters have not been disclosed.

Styler is directing and producing The Reception, marking her fourth feature-length directing project. Her previous work behind the camera includes Freak Show, the documentary Posso Entrare? An Ode to Naples, and Up Against It, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival this year. The filmmaker is producing the comedy alongside Celine Rattray, co-founder of Maven Screen Media, and Piers Tempest of Tempo Productions.

The screenplay has been written by Tom Stourton and Tom Palmer. Peter Chiarelli and Fred Fernandez-Armesto are executive producers. The project brings together a creative team with Styler overseeing both direction and production, while Stourton and Palmer are responsible for translating the wedding-reception premise into a feature screenplay.

Beta Cinema will launch international sales for The Reception at the American Film Market, which begins on November 10. CAA is representing the film’s domestic rights. The announcement does not provide a release date, and further details about the production and distribution plans have not yet been disclosed.

With Jeff Daniels, John Cleese, Dominic West and Portia de Rossi among its principal cast, The Reception brings together performers whose screen careers span comedy, television and drama. Its story is built around an unusual social predicament: a wedding reception that continues even after the bride has been left at the altar and the groom has departed. The Scottish estate, the gathering of the two families and the guests’ attempts to manage an increasingly awkward celebration form the basis of the comedy. Further details about the characters and the film’s release plans are awaited.
