India Box Office: Jailer 2 Opens to ₹200 Crore, Including a ₹140 Crore Weekend, as Ranabaali Debuts in Second Place

Jailer 2 leads the India box office as Ranabaali opens in second place

The India box office for the October 16–18 weekend was dominated by a single film. Jailer 2, the sequel to Rajinikanth’s 2023 blockbuster, arrived amid enormous anticipation and delivered a strong opening, collecting ₹140.2 crore from Friday to Sunday. An additional ₹60 crore earned on Thursday took its overall opening to approximately ₹200 crore, placing it among the biggest openings of 2026. Meanwhile, Ranabaali debuted in second place, while several other films continued their theatrical runs during a busy festive weekend.

Jailer 2, Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, who also helmed the original, the film stars Rajinikanth in the lead role and continues the story of the retired jailer and his family. Its opening places it among the biggest Tamil film debuts in recent history and reinforces Rajinikanth’s continued box-office appeal.

Ranabaali, a period action drama set against the backdrop of the 1876 Madras famine, opened in second place with ₹24.05 crore. Directed by Rahul Sankrityan, the film stars Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna as a couple caught in the brutal grip of British colonial policy. Its historical subject matter generated significant pre-release interest. The opening weekend marked a notable debut for the Telugu period drama, although critical responses have been mixed. Several reviews have acknowledged the performances while pointing to excessive violence as a weakness.

Drishyam: The Conclusion held third place with ₹14.35 crore in its third weekend. The Ajay Devgn-led franchise instalment has crossed ₹290 crore in India net collections, making it one of the year’s biggest Hindi-language successes. The film continues to attract audiences as newer releases compete for screens.

The Kannada romantic drama Premada Oorali collected ₹12.15 crore to secure fourth place in its fourth weekend. The film has emerged as one of the more impressive performers of the festive season, crossing ₹65 crore in India, a strong cumulative total for a Kannada release.

The new Telugu release Nayyi Navelli opened in fifth place with ₹11.65 crore, marking a solid debut across Telugu-speaking markets.

Prahaar: The Ujjwal Nikam Story took sixth place with ₹9.15 crore. The legal drama is based on the real-life public prosecutor known for his work on high-profile cases. Its opening marked a notable debut for a film centred on courtroom proceedings and recent Indian legal history.

Street Fighter, now in its second weekend, held seventh place with ₹4.08 crore. The Hollywood video-game adaptation has recorded a modest run in India, attracting gaming fans and action-film audiences without achieving a broader commercial breakthrough.

The new release DeSu7 opened in eighth place with ₹2.47 crore, while Garividi Lakshmi debuted in ninth with ₹1.37 crore. Rounding out the top 10 was Doraemon: Castle of the Undersea Devil in 4DX, which collected ₹1.10 crore. The animated film continued to draw family audiences in its fifth week.

Hanuman Ansh completed its eleventh weekend on the chart with ₹0.86 crore. After nearly three months in cinemas, the film is approaching the later stages of its theatrical run. Its cumulative India net collection stands well above ₹315 crore.

The weekend of October 16–18 demonstrated that the festive season is well underway, with Jailer 2 leading the market and several regional-language releases contributing to the overall box-office performance. With Ramayana: Part 1 scheduled for Diwali and Avengers: Doomsday expected in December, major releases are still ahead in the 2026 theatrical calendar.
