That idea becomes part of the film’s 1932 storyline, which follows a young man who is denied entry to a prestigious social club in Granada after its members suspect that he is gay. Through this historical thread, the film connects questions of identity and exclusion with the broader themes running through its three narratives.
The project also has an unusual personal dimension behind the camera. Calvo and Ambrossi ended their romantic relationship in November 2025 after 13 years together but continued working professionally as filmmaking partners. Their decision to complete La Bola Negra together adds another layer to a film already concerned with love, separation, memory and the lasting impact of relationships.
The cast combines established performers with actors taking significant new steps in their careers. Guitarricadelafuente makes his feature acting debut as Sebastián, a young man caught up in the film’s wartime storyline.
