Michael Keaton and Morgan Freeman are heading back to the screen together in Rode to Ruin, a Western thriller acquired by Angel Studios for worldwide rights ahead of TIFF: The Market. Michael Keaton will direct and star as retired U.S. Marshal Henry Tillman, while Morgan Freeman plays aging outlaw Joseph Mulberry, whose fading memory becomes central to the story. Angel Studios will distribute the film in the United States in 2027 and will begin international pre-sales at TIFF: The Market, running September 10–16.
The timing gives the project an unusual cinematic connection. Henry Tillman has spent 40 years searching for his wife’s killer, while Michael Keaton and Morgan Freeman are returning to the screen nearly four decades after their previous film together, 1988’s Clean and Sober. That gap makes the reunion especially fitting for a story focused on time, memory and the consequences of choices that refuse to stay buried.
Rode to Ruin follows Henry Tillman after his long pursuit finally brings him to Mulberry, a wanted outlaw whose memory is slipping. Their encounter opens the door to a buried truth that could endanger both men. Rather than using the Western setting simply for gunfights and frontier action, the film is built around questions of revenge, forgiveness and redemption, with time becoming an important part of the characters’ struggle.
For Michael Keaton, the project also adds another chapter to his work behind the camera. Rode to Ruin is his third feature as director, following The Merry Gentleman and Knox Goes Away. He is taking on the lead role at the same time, giving him creative responsibility on both sides of the camera. The combination is notable because the film depends heavily on the relationship between its two central characters rather than a large ensemble.
Morgan Freeman brings a different connection to the Western. His career includes the acclaimed 1992 Western Unforgiven, but Joseph Mulberry offers a more vulnerable kind of frontier character. Instead of playing an assured gunslinger, Freeman portrays a wanted man confronting the effects of a failing memory while carrying knowledge of a past that Henry Tillman has spent decades trying to understand.
The Angel Studios deal is significant beyond the film itself. The company is using Rode to Ruin to move into international pre-sales, building on a distribution network that it says has taken its films theatrically to more than 95 countries. International buyers will now have an opportunity to come aboard before the movie reaches theatres, making the project part of a broader expansion in how Angel handles its titles outside the United States.
That business move will come into focus at TIFF: The Market, Toronto’s official market scheduled for September 10–16. Rode to Ruin is a market title rather than a confirmed selection for the Toronto International Film Festival’s movie lineup, an important distinction as buyers assess the project for international territories. The film comes from Revelations Entertainment and George & Leona Productions, with R. Dean McCreary writing the screenplay and Lori McCreary, Michael Keaton, Kelly Mendelsohn and Gary Lucchesi producing.
The market launch also gives the film a practical path toward building overseas interest while its creative team continues developing the production for its eventual theatrical arrival internationally.
With production still awaiting a confirmed start date and no specific theatrical date announced, 2027 remains the planned release window. For now, the project’s appeal lies in the meeting of two long-established performers, a character-driven Western premise and a new international chapter for its distributor. After nearly four decades apart, Michael Keaton and Morgan Freeman are returning to the same story at a point where memory, justice and time are all running toward the same destination.
