Kokurojo: The Samurai and the Prisoner (黒牢城) — Release Date: 19 June 2026. Directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa, starring Masahiro Motoki, Masaki Suda, Yuriko Yoshitaka and Munetaka Aoki. Based on the novel by Honobu Yonezawa, the Japanese-language film blends historical drama with mystery, set during the Sengoku period.
Set in the Azuchi era, Kokurojo: The Samurai and the Prisoner unfolds within the besieged walls of Arioka Castle. The story follows Araki Murashige, a samurai who rebels against his lord Oda Nobunaga and fortifies himself inside the castle as tensions escalate during the siege. Amid the uncertainty and pressure of the situation, a brutal and unexplained murder takes place within the castle, further intensifying fear and suspicion among those trapped inside.
With no clear answers and growing unrest among his allies, Murashige turns to an unlikely source for help—Kuroda Kanbei, a military strategist whom he had previously imprisoned. Known for his intellect and tactical brilliance, Kanbei begins assisting from his confinement, offering insights and deductions to unravel the mystery surrounding the crime.
The narrative combines elements of political conflict and investigative intrigue, situating a murder mystery within a historical war setting. As the siege continues, the search for answers unfolds alongside shifting loyalties, power struggles and the psychological strain of confinement.
Masahiro Motoki portrays Araki Murashige, while Masaki Suda plays Kuroda Kanbei. The cast also includes Yuriko Yoshitaka as Chiyoho, along with Munetaka Aoki and Ryota Miyadate in supporting roles, forming an ensemble that reflects the layered dynamics within the castle.
Directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa, the film marks his exploration of both the jidaigeki (period drama) and mystery genres. The source novel by Honobu Yonezawa, a recipient of the Naoki Prize, provides the narrative foundation for the adaptation.
Kokurojo: The Samurai and the Prisoner is scheduled for theatrical release in Japan on 19 June 2026 by Shochiku.
