Opus is a 2025 American thriller film written and directed by Mark Anthony Green in his feature directorial debut. Starring Ayo Edebiri, John Malkovich, Juliette Lewis, Murray Bartlett, Amber Midthunder, Young Mazino, Stephanie Suganami, Tatanka Means, and Tony Hale, the film made its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 27, 2025. It is set for a theatrical release on March 14, 2025, distributed by A24 and Warner Bros. Pictures in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
The story follows a young writer (Ayo Edebiri), who is given the rare opportunity to visit the secluded compound of a once-revered pop star (John Malkovich) who vanished from the public eye three decades ago. The invitation promises an exclusive look into the life of a musical genius whose sudden disappearance left the industry and his fans puzzled. However, upon her arrival, she discovers that the reclusive artist is far from the enigmatic icon she once idolized.
Within the compound, she finds herself surrounded by a bizarre and devoted cult of sycophants, loyal to the star in unsettling ways. Among them are a group of intoxicated journalists, who, like her, are drawn into the artist’s magnetic yet eerie presence. As she attempts to piece together the truth behind his decades-long absence, the atmosphere grows increasingly ominous, blurring the line between reality and manipulation.
As secrets unravel, she begins to suspect that she is not merely an observer but a pawn in a twisted and elaborate scheme orchestrated by the pop star himself. Is he making a long-awaited comeback, or is she caught in a dangerous psychological game with no escape?
With its tense atmosphere, psychological depth, and eerie setting, Opus explores the dangers of blind devotion, the power of mythmaking, and the dark side of artistic obsession, making it a gripping thriller that keeps audiences on edge until the very last moment.
